Is that a newer version of the Spec C Type RA? Or whatever the bloody name is 😂

Lent the chav wagon to the wife last week..... washed the following day and carried out my weekly fluid levels checks. s**t myself as it had lost approx 1 1/2 pints of coolant.

Ran the car upto temp to discover it was leaking bottom right from rad and steaming.

Ordered a new rad, pipes and coolant. Fitted this afternoon and bleed the system through painstakingly slow to guarantee no air lock.

All sorted! Not letting the wife use it again. That’s a shagged tyre on her Merc and a rad in mine within 24hrs.

Fooking woman drivers.

It was going so well! 1500 miles in and I was smitten with her! After completing her weekly fluid checks it became apparent that she is pushing coolant into the expansion bottle.

After some investigation work I noted that anything under 1.4bar no coolant would be pushed but everything over upto 1.7bar the expansion tank rises.

Fortunately I have caught this very early so it’s not going to have done any internal damage but that said and done, it’s not going to be a cheap fix either.

17 grand build, 4000 miles and the engine now needs to come out 😂

Personally I think the heads/head are lifting under high boost but we won’t know anymore until it’s checked over.

Last pic taken before I drove her to the Poobarau Specialist and swapped the cars over.

Heads lifting at anything over 1.4bar! Really are s**t those engines, let's be honest.

I wish the previous owner just forged the 2 litre engine and it wouldn’t have been a problem.

Even though it has only covered 4K it was built in 2009, since then on the 2.5 there is a option to drill the heads and fit larger head bolts which prevent high boost lift. Won’t know if this has been done until the heads are removed.

Real shame as it’s a monster when on the move, more so than the figures suggest.

Does the paperwork say what kind of headbolt, gasket etc was used? Seems pretty pony that they can't manage 20 psi and 400 odd horse.

Have you double checked they are torqued correctly still? (If possible)

Nope. Tbh for all I know they could have used a standard head gasket as back then they were not a known issue.

Will just have to wait and see.

I’m hoping it’s a case of engine out, heads off, better head gasket, better studs, bolt back up and go. That’s still over 2 grand mind.

If I have to rebuild the engine for whatever reason I’ll have to think if it’s worth the effort.

Ballache. My previous 2.5 hatch engine had covered 35k since being built after I did the research and contacted the builder, so they can last. The problem is definitely the heads, though. They just don't take the power. This was still on an open deck, too. The car was around 360-80bhp.

His words to me were "Oh yes, they'll do over 400 no problem. Just not for very long." lol.

Not bad for an open deck but if it was done in 2009 then times were a lot different back then the 2.5 was the daddie because capacity. Unfortunately many found out the hard and expensive way thats not the case. Hope its as simple as new gaskets and head studs still a ballache on a scooby tho.

That's mine, I'm not sure if Ant's is a closed deck or not. Either way the heads are s**t lol

I thought most EJ's were open or semi-open deck? Closed deck were in some STI's and stuff.

Had confirmation that it’s head gasket so I’m glad I caught it very early.

They are confident all will be ok and will be around1500.

Im keen to know what gasket were used and what studs are fitted. Fingers crossed it will be sorted for under 2k.

My questions are when engine opened:-

Gaskets? Studs? Closed or semi block?

Should be getting this back in the next few days.

Interesting finds now engine is apart.

Scooby Clinic fitted incorrect headbolts rated for 350bhp not over 450bhp like I’m running.

Incorrect head gasket fitted which restricts coolant flow.

Heads have lifted under boost which has caused the failure.

No bore or piston damage and oil filter is clean which is good news for bearings.

Pretty piss poor for 17 grand bill and 4K miles but it is what it is.

Bit of a dead lock with the wife. If she cleans her car I’ll mow the lawn. Needless to say her car is still dirty.
Good job i don't do that with my Mrs, the garden would be like day of the Trifods.
