New shape 1.2 fuel consumption

Hi guys,

I am new to this website, i have searched for the topic but couldnt find anything.

i recently bought a new shape clio extreme 1.2 16v, and one of the main reasons why i bought it was because the combined fuel consumption is supposed to be 47.9 mpg. Extra Urban 57.9mpg and urban 37.9mpg

slight problem, ever since i have got the car, it has barely touched 40mpg!

currently at 37.8mpg.

i dont boot it really, maybe the odd 4000rpm in first, but thats it.

Most of my driving is on the dual carriage way, i would say 20 out of my 30 miles a day is dual carriageway and the other 10 in town driving.

what i am doing wrong?

my mates civic sport trip computer showed his car doing 39 mpg!

is it because the car is new?

anyone shed any light on this?

well the engine in your mk3, is the samein my late model mk2, and the figures are shocking mine is about 44, the most ive ever had outo f it on a 400mile tril was 49.9. yours would be less as the mk3 is a fir bit heavier than the mk2 iirc.
i drive every where in 5th , if i'm really sedate with it i can get it over 46mpg.

also i notice i get a good 2-3mpg more out of shell fuel than i do form supermarket fuel. i filled up with tesco stuff once and i was only getting 41.1 mpg, next fill up with shell back up to 44.2.

also check yuo tyre pressures, i run mine ar 33/31 and its fine running 31/29makes the car a bit sliggish IMO. also when did you rest the trip, does the mk3 trip computer give average or intantanious readings?

also is it a brand new engine, it should loosen up a bit after a few thousand miles and the economy should go up a little.
i know diesels can get almost 10mpg more one the engine has been "broken in"

the car is brand new, it has done 1300 miles,

the trip gives an intantanious, changes every 400 metres i think,

i fill up with morrisons fuel aswell,

i always go everywhere in fifth, even in 30 zones,

its getting to a stage where im coasting everywhere to get the mpg up!

yeah its still breaking in. it shoudl improve a bit when it loosens up.

also i know its perhaps 1p a litre more but switch to shell or BP, or another company whoo refine their own fuel, the supermarkets load the fuel with silicon to make it runnier and that can affect your lamda sensors clogging them. I also notice a drop in performance on supermarket fuel.

if its got an average consumption guage use that not the instantanious, its a better measure, i reset mine every fill up.

just so i know where to go!

how many miles do you think before the engine breaks in?

my trip computer doesnt have an average i think, just the instantanious one, hopefully someone may correct me on that!

30 zones in 5th will be labouring the engine and using more fuel than if you were in 4th I'd have thought. But to be fair, if you want maximum economy, it's already costing you a fortune per mile in depreciation. New cars for money reasons aren't really a win...

The other problem is the Mk3 is very heavy an that little 75bhp lump will have to work very hard to shift it. I'd be amazed if it ever actually got to 57.9mpg to be fair.

there is no way i am expecting 57 mpg, thats what diesels do!

it just p**ses me off that they say it can do that, but when you get it, it is nowhere near,

i mean the 197 combined mpg should be 37.9!!

i very much doubt that people with the 197 can get that!

i mean 38 mpg isnt too bad, still get 515 miles off a 55 litre tank. But i would just like it to be what it said it would be!

It will get a bit better as it runs in for sure - it'll still be quite tight at the moment.

I've been able when the car is working correctly (not at the moment idle control issue) to get about 40mpg in normal day to day driving with upto about 44mpg on a longer journey.

It'll say in the hand book how long to run the engine in, once you've got past that point the mpg will improve,

Shell, BP, Esso refine there own fuel, i've used Shell since i've had my clio and find this to be the best for it, mine will drink a tank of fuel very very quickly on Esso so i tend to avoid it as much as possible

my mk2 ph2 did about 40-42mpg id expect the same lump in a mk3 would do about 36-38 an dont think the dci lump will get 57-60 im getting 55mpg out of mine

My mums new shape MK3 1.5 is AWFUL for fuel consumption. Makes her wish she stuck with her MK2 diesel. Which needed filling up every 2nd pass of Halley's comet.

I get 34 out of the Cup, and I drive it like I stole it most of the time. Everyone at the 2007 Scottish Cliosport meet couldn't believe it.

I'm getting about late30's out of my 1.2 16v aswell mate, its not a problem with the car its the type of driving you do,i got over 50mpg on a motorway run, around town late 30's its pretty standard, done worrie about it or get deisel

i average 35mpg in my 172 when i behave, 28mpg on VTEC lol
