newbie question

  2003 clio 172
hi,

i have a 53 plate 172 (61k on the clock) which i love. However in 14 months of owning it have had to replace the exhaust, lambda sensor, rear discs and pads, bottom ball joints, steering rods, handbrake cable, front tyres (which need doing again) and rear wheel bearings. in 17 years of owning cars i have never had to replace so much in such a short space of time, now i don't know the history of the car, so it may have had some hammer. However whilst i enjoy the occasional blast, i am not overly harsh on the car. Am i being unlucky, or is this a side effect of owning a 172. TBH whilst i love the car, i really can't keep throwing money at it like this.

its a cheap french car, what do you expect?

could be worse, the cambelt could've snapped and you have a bill for £1300min

Two sets of front tyres in 14 months? Track/Traffic light grand prix fan?

A lot of these are fairly common with all cars tbf. (Pads/Discs/Exhaust/Tyres)

In the 15 months of owning my 182 (35k when bought, 51k now), I've had more than that done to mine. Like already mentioned though, it's part and parcel of owning one.

The car is 7 to 8years old so this has to be expected. All the parts you have replaced are commonly failing according to the Forum users. Hopefully you will have some troublefree motoring for sometime now.

Little bit unlucky that the faults have happened close together but the comsumables would need replacing whatever car you had.

thanks guys. i appreciate the answers. sounds like part and parcel of owning one, and by the sounds of it i have been lucky compared to some. maybe i've been lucky with previous cars, obviously had to replace parts, just not so concentrated in short space of time.

@dave 63, yes occasionally like to put my foot down, but don't think i'm too harsh (maybe i am!!!). To be fair the tyres i've just worn out were part worn, but are conti sport contacts and had over 6 mm on them

@kevster yes cam belt was done by last owner (i have the receipt!!) at 40k. Hopefully another 20K to go before that one has to be paid for.

yes worn evenly across the width of the tyre. guess i'm just a bit heavy footed. going for pirelli P zero nero next. hopefully last a bit longer. wouldn't mind but i haven't taken it on a track yet either.

I've got PZeros on the front of mine at the moment and they're OK but nothing special. Only done a few miles in it as had it a few weeks, so no idea how soft they are / how long they'll last. Did about 10k on a set of Paradas, swapped over after about 8k front > rear, and there was LOTS of tread left when I sold the car all round.

No idea how you're eating tyres. How many miles have you done on them ? Are they on the wear bars already !?

when i bought the car it has some budget tyres called "event" on them. To be fair the back are going strong, but wore the new ones out in 8 months (about 7k) replaced them with the PW conti's on the front and i've done about 3-4k on them. don't wheel spin and haven't taken on a track so not sure either. the guy at the independent garage where i take it (ex renault employee) says you are doing well to get 12k out of a front set. I can only dream!!!!

my car is running on pirelli p zeros only had the car for a month so i cant really comment on how long they last but they are a grippy tyre and have low road noise to

to be fair its the same with any car ,they are all consumable items....its nothing to do with the 172, its part and parcel of owning a car.. :)
