"Oil ok" then "Oil _ _ _ _ _ _" & SERV light

I think my car might have just been having a moment. Driving round all day yesterday and all was well. Popped to see my old man for a bit and when I left, turned the ignition on and the display came up with "Oil _ _ _ _ " rather than "Oil Ok" and the SERV light was on.

It's only a short drive home so I carried on. Got home, left the car to cool down and went to check the oil level and it's half-way between the notches on the dipstick as it always has been, and a nice clear/brown colour as always so looks healthy to me.

Started the car up and all back to normal, no SERV light on and "Oil Ok" was back.

Anything to worry about or is my car just being a dick?

i try to check the physical level weekly and use the in-car gauge as a rough guide in between, if your oil level is infact between MIN - MAX then your car might have just been having a bad day at the office !

My Ph1 did this once.. I checked with the stalk every time I started the car.

This time, all the lights came on as i started the engine suggesting it had all gone.. i rolled back, there was not 5l of oil on my driveway, so I carried on to work Turned it off, turned it on at lunch and it had all miraculously come back.

It's all displayed fine etc for the few times I've used it today, so would apear my car was just having an off day.

Mine stopped displaying Oil ok totally the other day! got a bit worried the sensor had died, but the next day it was fine!

Mine did it once, checked dipstick and it was OK. Been fine since :S

when you turn the car on and it says "Oil OK" press the black stalk poking out the clocks, it should say

0000000

that means it full

if it shows

000----

that means it halfway

if it flashes

I wouldnt trust what it says 100% mine will alter what it says each time you switch it on!

People should manually check their oil anyways! I do but because its DERV its so black and minging 90% of the time its hard to tell how much is in there because it's stained the dipstick! lol

check the oil if correct then replace the oil level sensor

Thanks Fred, I never knew about that!

Gave it a go and I'm getting 000--- so that would match with the half way between notches on the dip stick. Good stuff!

could be the oil level sensor on its way out, if it keeps happening and your oil is fine, you know the problem.
