oil pressure

Just noticed that my gauge says close on 5 bar. Is this right? Would the 2L bottom end make it higher? I just dont recall it being that high. Sitting there it was 3 but driving it went up to 5 at times. Not going over 30mph or 3k revs.

Wouldnt expect it to be that high - flooring it my 1.8 goes slightly over 3bar but then again i wouldnt put to much faith in the gauge itself!

Could be a combination of the oil grade and or maybe an old sensor? Either way i wouldnt think its a problem - if it was very low then id be more concerned maybe....

But how high can it go?

I feel that if i push the car a bit the pressure will go above gauge limit!

I take it the gauge goes just above 6 bar for a reason?

dont know about the megan but the williams has a group A oil pump of some description, its certainly an uprated item over the 16v, i was constantly getting 6bar in my old williams engined 16v, when previously i would be lucky to get half that, but remebr alot of it is defined by the type of oil used.

but again just the benifit of going 2ltr!

hmmmmm, thats odd, cus the williams uses the same oil pump a the diesel. the specs from renault rate the max oil pressure of the pump to 3.5bar at 3k revs. same as the 1.8 oil pump

high oil pressure depends on a couple of things;

oil specification - whether its too thick or

oil pressure bypass valve - this works via a spring and plunger, when the oil pressure gets high enough, the spring strneght os overcome, and the oil is diverted back to the sump, before it reaches any critical areas like seals, etc

i run valvoline racing 20w50 oil in my williams (its treacle thick when cold). oil pressure is in tip top conditon, never going really high. i doubt its an oil thickness problem.

a new oil pump is £50, which is a brand new item, with new gears, oil pressure switch, etc. its a simple job to replace.

My gauge always reads too low!!!

Ive given up on it!!

Changed oil pressure sender, gauge and even the pump, tried different kinds of oil too... but still I never get over 3 bar when cold, and never above1,5 bar when hot...

Engine is running better than ever!! No tappety sounds at all, even when cold as it is now!!

Conclusion: Oil pressure and Valvers/Willys really is difficult to understand!!!....

Sounds like the oil was still cold to me...

engine at operating temp oil pressure should be:-

1 bar @idle

3 bar @3000rpm

oil pressure will start to get a lot higher as the revs go above 3000rpm but renault only give you the values for idle and 3000rpm.

start up im assuming now is 0c or similar....

and what oil are you using?

Mine will idle at 5 bar when stone cold.

I have Castrol GTX. Mine doesnt idle that high at cold...

Im assuming all gagues are slightly (some more than others) inacurate...

High oil presure is good isnt it?

Got the car back again, gave it a bit more this time (wow) and the pressure dropped. So dont think there is a prob, i hope. It just seems to like sitting high when cold.

When my 16v was standard i found from cold the oil pressure hit 6bar NP, on tickover i used to get 1.5bar - motorway driving worked out at 3 - 4bar. This 2.0ltr i have now never goes over 3bar from hot or cold. Think my pump is shagged. Im having BBPT run some tests at my next service.

If Im rebuilding the bottom end of a 1.8 16v is it worth getting the 2.0ltr oil pump, instead of the standard 16v one? cos its uprated??#

cheers Tony.
