Oil top up.. (contains n00b)

  1.2 Dynamique 16v
I topped up my oil today because it was at the minimum on the dipstick. I topped her up with 5w30 fully sythentic oil (castrol). After I did it, I was told by a friend that the oil I used is more for volkswagens etc because it's thinner and lasts longer or something..

Have I done something wrong, I know there was 5w30 in there but not sure if it was fully sythentic?

Also I had a oil change done when I had a major service done last september, is it normal to have to put in about 1 and a bit litres to get it back to full? I do about 250-300 (mainly motorway) miles a week so I'm guessing that plays some role in oil comsumption.

It seems fine but opinions?

I'll be having a full service done in a couple of months.

Thanks

Not that I have noticed. I'll have a look in the morning to see if there are any patches under the car.

Are leaks easy to fix if there is one?

Random questions, did you check the dipstick after the car had been stood for atleast 10 mins, or directly after engine was running, and by full do you mean to the top of the dipstick? Or so it's full to where you poored in the oil?

I had an oil change september last year, and mines still full now. Actually reads above the top marker on the dipstick.
Doubt it would burn oil that much, Had the car been running shortly before you checked the oil level?

Directly after I started up today. I pressed the button on the dashboard to check that the oil level was alright, it was at 2/6. Then I checked the dipstick and it was at minimum.

It has been going down gradually (I check the dashboard thing on most start ups). But I don't know if this is normal.

By full I mean on the dipstick, would of been a huge fail otherwise lol

Arg, don't check the oil directly after the engines been running! You potentially have to much oil in it now.

As when it's been running oil is splashed all over the inside of the engine, not sitting in the sump, so appears like it has no oil in it.

Hmm, thats slightly worrying if yours is still full.

It had been running for like a minute between pressing the button on the dash and checking the dipstick.

Ergh. It's been sitting for about an hour now.

Should I check it now?

You check the oil on the dipstick readout from a cold engine.
Also how do you check the oil level from the dash?

When you start up the engine it says Oil Ok. Press the stick thing on your dashboard and it gives you a level out of 6 markers.

If it's same as 1*2s, when putting ignition on it says "oil ok" then press the button on the dash and brings up a little reading off the oil.

Yeah now is good!

Just looked.. It was like 1 millimetre below maximum. Apart from a couple of splodges further up, but I think that was from the touching the sides as I was taking it out.

Lol, mines never said oil ok. Im guessing you have the screen on the speedo? not in the centre?

Yeah I have the rev counter on the left, screen in the middle and speedo on the right

What do you have?

Dynamique. So shush, no poorboy spec here.

This is my dial layout, Different from 1*2's. Is it the same as yours then tommys?

Right, when yo start the car it will say oil ok in the bottom left of the display... press the trip reset button once and this will display the oil level...

Thats very similar, the bottom screen thing with indicators and stuff is the same. But I have fuel and temperature dials not a screen.. :(

But mine has another screen in the middle of the speedo. Thats where it says Oil OK and mileage/trip computer info etc.

Seems you don't have a poor boy spec afterall.. :(

I'm running with motul 5w 40 right now, but ran out of what I had left in the 2L metal canister so now if I were to top up with some Elf 5w 40 would it be ok? oil level is right half way between min and max on the dipstick and service is due to be done in about 1,2k miles

As long as it's the same grade oil I can't see a different make doing any harm. I just top mine up with what's available.

If I were you I would not mix different oils (regardless their grade/brand, fully shyntetic or not). The additives of the new oil may modify the properties of the old oil. I would not risk it.

it will be fine
