Painting Help....

As the sun is (marginly) out I am doing some painting (finally going orange!!), but the instructions on the cans say you have to use fine Wet and Dry adter you have applied the undercoat and then before the laquer to get "the best possible finsih and colour match". Ummm...I dont want to be sanding down a nice fresh painted surface. I know it says fine wet and dry as in like smooth paper but still. Has anyone had any experience on this before?

Ps. Colour looks ridiculous!! Will get photos up when the colour is on :p
