PH1 airbox

Looking at refitting the ph1 airbox instead of the induction kit which is currently fitted to the car. The battery has been moved to the boot of the car so there is alot of spare space in the engine bay.

Is there any reason why the airbox is sat vertically apart from the space it takes up?

Im looking at fixing the airbox horizontal so there is just a small piece of hose between the airbox and the TB meaning its straight rather than the typical 90 degree bend.

any reason why not to do this?

thanks

Reason why not to do it is because the ph1 airbox is over rated. This all came from the fact that a few got it into their heads it looks like a Maxogen so must be a Maxogen and its spread from there.
2 pointers. If its that good why wasnt it fitted to the ph's2 and 182's? Why have the big power boys on here not got them fitted ??

You have your battery in the boot so your half way there to making the best possible use of the intake system. As already stated one of the biggest restrictions in the whole intake track and one that gets overlooked is the inlet pipe. 45 degree bend i think it is, extended right to the passenger head light with a half decent IK on the end, job done

the ph1 airbox is too long to fit onto a straight pipe no matter how short it is... I tried this before and then used a maxogen, I will find the pic at home and post. I then opted for a 45 degree bend with a straight maxogen as below with nice air feed direct from wheel arche:

I've been thinking about this also. Although i did have an idea about turning the airbox so the inlets pipes faced upwards, and then fitting a small celica gt4 style vent in the bonnet like on the st205 [not a chavy one] which would connect to the airbox. That way in theory you should get air forced straight in and pressurize the airbox.

what do u think?

there would need to be a seal of some sort between the two to make that work, it would then give a ram air effect, but running a closed inlet from the airbox to the front grille would give the same affect
