hi, going to look at a ph1 172 tomorrow, its a rare milano red y plate, has done 104k, comp service history, standard bar new 172 cup struts and eibach sportline suspension. what should i look out for, what are these cars like to drive, i presume they are quite quick? iv had a clio 16v, a williams, a 172 cup and just sold my impreza and looking for something cheaper but still fun. also what mods would improve the car? thanks guys.

Hi mate,

There is a comprehensive buyers guide on the forum. That will point out everything to look out for.

Main thing is service history, proof of belts being changed and to check all panels etc for sign of crash damage.

Phase 1 is the best of the bunch imo :) such good fun to drive. is there a link on the internet for this car?

hi, yes belts were done at 76k 3 years ago. he also has a yozzasport cat back stealth exhaust which is new but not yet fitted he wants extra for, are they any good? does a decat make any difference, what about panel filter, chips etc.

thats what he said, he has had the car since january, so its not beyond the realms of possibility. is it worth porting the inlet manifolds on the ph1?

Ph1's are just the same as the rest, same suspension etc as 172 cups and tbh they're all pretty much the same to drive.

Check for wear on the engine and gearbox mounts, they aren't cheap to replace.

As for performance. I had k-tec de-cat, Btb stealth cat back, itg panel filter and Rs tuner generic map. It seemed to go very quickly, matched inlets was the next step and are meant to make a good difference on the 172's

hammer it in 1st and second, any weird noises = mounts knackered

172 cup suspension is completley different to a phs1 (in terms of axles/hubs etc)
