Poss new car but dont know weather to buy.. Your opinions?

Right going to need your opinions on this here... just got off the phone to fred as hes been to view a car for me located in birmingham (thanks fred il sort you out with some money or something, il PM you about it later)...Anyway...

Its got full renault service history up to 35k then its just got "specialist" service history reciepts but with no stamps in the book. The milage is now 69k

its going to need a full front bumper respray and possibly the wings aswell. there is a dent in the door that needs pulling out and its also got micky mouse tyres on and the original exhaust still.

He says it drives well but the steerin wheel isn't straight and its not the tracking so that will need "adjusting"... He then said if i can get it for around 2.5k then its a good buy as il have 500 to get it looking minty mint..Iv HPI checked it and all is clear...

its the part service history thats putting me off... im stuck now tbh as i dont know what to do... tobuy or not to buy... what do your lot think? opinions?

If theres receipts to backup the service history then id treat them as good as, if not better than just stamps in the service book.

Service history wouldt bother me. Specialists take more care than dealers. Think Rentech/Birchdown/Mark Fish.. Id rather have receipts from them tbh.

The respray is going to be say £500? Dent sorting. Another £200+ on decent tyres. Then theres the issue of the steering and if it isnt the tracking? Well thats going to cost more to fix.

Obviously id trust Freds judgement more than mine when I havent seen/driven it, but personally id walk away and leave it. Theres too many things wrong IMO, especially as its not that cheap.

Im guessing you're keen because its yellow, but be patient dude, you'll find another..

If you have the reciepts for the services then thats just as good as stamps, will have the reg, mileage and dates on surely?

Just make a few photocopies to make sure you will always have the records of them and job done.

You could buy it and then p/x with my car....

Its not exactly part service history, its still been serviced, just not with Renault. Nothing wrong with that IMO, the majority of the servicing does not need Renault to do it for anything more than a stamp in the book, the belts are probs worth going to renault for but thats about it imo.

By faults i meant the mystery steering problem that isnt tracking. Tyres etc arent the end of the world they can easily be replaced.

exactly what im thinking James! Iv made an offer on it... I dont mind restoring it a little as il not be driving it while april. Its just these dont come up everyday.
I know a guy who will paint me the front bumper etc for about 200 then il get the dent sorted...

Just read the Description on Ebay, and the seller states that 'the body is immaculate, no dents or scratches’ but Fred says that it needs a full bumper re-spray, possibly the wings and the door dent pulling out.

The seller then states‘well believe me I can honestly say this car drives without fault’ but your saying there is something wrong with the steering that could be more then just tracking.

‘drives like it did when it was brand new’ ‘This car is as it left the factory’ well if the car was like that new, i'd be more then disapointed!

MOT runs out in May, i'm sure it would be a failure with the steering problems, could be wrong. Would he be willing to put it through an Mot before you buy it, to make sure no problems show up.

Not knocking the car, as it looks nice but isn’t the seller trying to downplay the bad points? That’s just my opinion, but obs is up to you. Theres some nice examples about, ok maybe not in yellow.

Id rather have the reciepts and no stamps, instead of stamps and no reciepts as the book could have just been stamped by a friend, if your not sure about it mate leave it, i know they dont come up forsale often in yellow but if your not 100%? unless you can knock him down on price?

I paid just under £2500 for a ph1, less miles (under 50K), needing a front end respray (desperately!). That was over 6 months ago, and prices have dropped since then. £2500 would be the absolute max I'd pay, closer to 2k if it wasn't sunflower.

best off going having a look yourself and be cheeky with the offer cash in hand 2k i reckon he would take it the problems listed are only small and can be easily sorted out and the colour is pretty funky

I work all over the show tbh mate, wherever theres a council house...im there. Some of the areas that spring to mind are Upperthorpe, The Manor Estate (lol), Stocksbridge. Is the hospital near the uni? I know the uni area very well lol aka....the rat run!!!

That one looks like a cracking example however its in london so its a fair few miles away from sheffield ...

I will just have to keep a lookout. if i can get a ph2 for around 3k/3.5 then il have to look into that possibility!

Its a shame about the seller tbh id have thought 2.5k is a fair price all round.

Its ok pal, im from middlesbrough and went all the way to bournmouth for my old iceberg ph1 172, coz at the time start of 2006 there was very few icebergs about and it was worth the drive. so london dosnt seem that far

Id say from what youve said about the condition of the car 2.5k is a fair price then you can get the things sorted, just speak to him again and offer 2.5k, was that your 1st offer?

i cant really say if freds being over picky as i havnt seen the car, best thing to do is jump on the train and go have a look yourself, at the end of the day its an 9yr old car

Tell him thanks but no thanks and tell him to call if he changes his mind.

He'll call in a week at the most and say yes to 2500 which is what im guessing you offered. Then offer him 2250

LOL @ £2K for a sunflower, anybody thats actually been out and bought one recently rather than sitting on here speculating will realise that £2.5k is right on the money. I looked at several ph1s before buying mine and mine isn't mint. As Daniel says its a 9 year old car on 69k, theres going to be stone chips and the odd parking.

all wheels kerbed

OE exhaust - rusty as hell

mechanically it felt fine, just the steering wheel on the piss

usual interior grab handles and steering wheel - worn to hell

Like I said, it just sounds like wear and tear to me.

None of the above would put me off, but I wouldn't want to pay more than £2500 for it.
