Possible Engine Mount Failure

  Clio 172
Hello all,

I did a timing belt and water pump on the 172 and of course took the upper engine mount off to do it.

Now under hard acceleration in 1st and 2nd I get an odd vibration noise half way up the rev range that stops.

Just to confirm this is a knackered engine mount and not anything else?

Cheers
Alex

Sounds like it..

Try undoing the mount, pulling the engine forward and tightening the mount up again.

Did you touch the upper gearbox mount at all?

It holds the engine in the car.

Simple.

Oh right!

I've got a group N top mount that i was gonna get fitted to my old clio sport. Will have to get that fitted then.

Is it easy to replace or does it need to go to a garage.

I'm good at basic mechanics and have tools, axle stands and 2ton jack.

Open the bonnet with the engine running and rev the car using the throttle body. You will be able to notice any excessive movement.

You could tell mine was broken without the engine even running.

That block of rubber should be above the piece of metal :rasp:

Easy to do, mate.

Jack under engine (with block of wood)

Support engine.

Undo bolts.

Jack up engine.

Remove mount,
replace.

Reverse procedure

sounds like top mount, I'd try not to drive it too much on that tbh

Suspension top mounts or Engine Top Mount?

Didn't touch the gearbox one at all, I'll check over the mounting later.

AFAIK, the timing is bang on as it doesn't do it if you drive around normal, its only if it give it a little bit of hard acceleration (pulling away into on coming traffic on a busy roundabout for instance)

Thanks for all your help anyway.

Right ok, I would have 2 noises then.

If the front wheels loose traction - have been a lot recently due to the snow, then I get a banging noise coming from the front which I thought may have been a set of suspension bushes because the front wheels were spinning.

It only have this slight vibration noise in first and second under hard acceleration.
