If you can get some leverage on it, like a pair of molegrips, you'll find you can actually feel it taking the pressure of the springs and that it DOES move the way you think it doesnt. (ie pulling it away from the engine)
Yeah, I think people sometime underestimate the amount of clamping force required to stop a clutch slipping when dealing with the torque of a 2 litre engine, even just an n/a one.
