Question about the timing (F4R)

Hi guys, few questions;

I had the car booked in at RenTech in Edinburgh today for a service and a check of the timing (the belts were done in November 2011). I had my suspicions as to whether the correct timing tools were used as it didn't feel as 'urgent' as the rest of the Clio RS' I've had. Anyway, turns out when they checked it, it was out right enough. Not by much, but out all the same. Wish i got a picture now, the horse shoe(?) wouldn't line up on the non cambelt side the guy showed me.

Now here's my question, just how much is it really affected being out slightly? They still have the car and are going to rectify it on Monday which is good. (Even If it is costing me £80!) But that's not their fault, life goes on!

Also, i gather MPG would be ever so slightly affected as well? The car ran sweet as a nut btw, nothing other than my slight suspicion of it being out made me get it checked!

Cheers!

Really Dan??? Even only being slightly out? The guy said it was out enough not to cause any real damage but enough to cause it to run like a pup (which it isn't?)

after 2 years of my timing being slightly out and a very very bad dephaser along with a stuffed lambda and possible injector i have spent £1000s and now fixed the lot and i feel my car is alot quicker and pulls alot better, Even the fuel gauge hardly moved now and im not filling up every few days with V-power Nitro+

Yes it does, dependant on which way timing is out it could work in your favour. Group n settings don't do anything for idling though.

So there is a good way and a bad way it can be out?

In a good way slightly increase performance and a bad way is like the OP said he is having? Less urgent, s**t on fuel etc.

When resetting the timing do you not have to releive the belt of tension , correct it then re-tension?is it not bad practice to do that?

Sorry for the highjack. :)

Not at all martin - certain the lad said the tension doesn't to be taken from the belt (i think?) as i understand it it is bad practice like you say!

Yeah basically, a rolling road would have to be used to decide what was bad or good really, as said it does nothing for idling and you think the car is running bad which it is from a smooth running sense but goes like he'll up the revs. Even with the timing it the 'good' way it won't do anything for your MPG.

Another CS myth that you should replace a belt every time it's touched.

Edit: you should slacken both cam and inlet pulley to reset timing, nothing wrong with resetting on an old belt if the cams or cover have to come off. Makes sense to fit a new one though if its got any mileage on it (only £70 for a gates timing belt kit)

I didn't know that about group n timing. The guy did comment that the belts were new when he was in about it.

That last part you said there Morgan - thats exactly what he said lol.

I wouldn't use a 2 year old tensioner tbh. Some are difficult to line up the notches after some use so a new tensioner is needed.

Neither would I Steven/Stephen? as its probably seen a good few miles on it but all sorts of keich gets repeated over and over on here about belts....really gets my back up tbh.

Both really......if the 'specialist' was happy with it don't worry, you'll be fine. What Steve has said just shows there is some wear/mileage in the tensioner, there good for another how ever many years and miles yet.

V mate but been called worse than the other spelling. ;)

Its been at least a couple of weeks since the last one. I was missing a good timing belt chat.

2 year old tensioner? On my car or marcs mate?

Both

Youll be able to tell if the tensioner has had it as when you try to line up the notches, they won't if it's had it. They get so far lining up then jump past it. I'm sure they know what they are doing.

If anyone is talking about my car all i can say is that "Everything" was done and its running like a sweet baby.
The only issue i have is that i have alittle rough idle on cold mornings.

Duuuh i meant November 2012! What a tit! Been a long day steve lol

Lol, no bother Danny. Thought that but thought I'd wind you up anyway.

You should be fine as it won't have done too many miles. Try and get a pic of how much it was out just out of curiousity.

And so you should! LOL.

I could kick myself for not taking a picture! I'll bell the boy on Monday morning and ask him to take a picture with the horse shoe in and without!

The oil he took out looked new as well :-/

Thats my point, they never used a 2 year old tensioner to fix your timing being out.

Impressive amount of work and spend that. Your car I'd definitely a keeper then!
