Question to all mod. 172 owners!

To all of you who have modified your 172s, whether Cups or not, and primarily relating to power-enhancing modifications, eg chips, pipes, and intakes.

a) What have you had done?

b) Have you NOTICED any improvements, or indeed any decline in performance? AP22 before/after?

c) Have you got rolling road printouts/figures?

This might seem a pain in the arse question, but to anyone who is thinking of modifying their car, nothing compares to personal recommendations or advice. I have already had some ace advice on brakes etc from some of you, so keep it rollin!

Cheers!:)

Just a Magnex exhaust and a Pipercross filter on the power side of things, Rolling roaded at 188bhp at the fly (158 at the wheels). No idea what it was before.

Eibach springs suit the car really well. Best mod you can do for around £200 all-in.

Can anyone tell me why despite having the largest amount of 172s, there isnt a single person in the whole club who has seriously done alot of work to the engine?

How hard is it to fit some tbs or s/c or turbo one?

Come on!!

(Vipers and chips/remaps are off the shelf stuff- lets get some money spent)

Theres just so little available. The 1.8 16v has been around for how many years? 10+, and only now can you get serious stuff like turbo conversions. You need to be a real hero to have a go at serious stuff on a 172.

Roamer should have some good stuff in the next few weeks though.....

Not true mate the stuff is about.

People need to start learning french

What ever happened to the good ol "sh*t they dont do it!, i know i will make one/get someone to make me one" attitude?

im guessing cost is the issue (well it is for me) as apart from the v6 boys we paid/are paying alot more for our cars than the valver owners(not a dig guys i love valvers). plus the amount of stuff developed is few and far inbetween too at the moment. if i had the cash and there was stuff available then id have it is the bottom line

If I was going to spend say £5k on a turbo or supercharger conversion Id want to see all the things Id normally associate with a £5k transaction:

Reputable supplier
Guaranteed results
Try before you buy
Otherwise its a gamble, and whilst I might scrape together £5k for a really good engine conversion, Id never gamble that sort of dosh.

three very valid points id be nervous of turning a new car which im still paying for now into something thats unreliable and whos performance gains may not be as stated. ive seen too many people turn what was a quick useable reliable car into and expensive unreliable pain in the search for more performance

it means you find someone who has already had the work done, take them out to the pub, get the completly blutered.. nick their keys and go for a test drive.

or he could mean a companies demo car..

Yep, cheers, Mike, I saw your RR result some time ago, seems a rather powerful one, by comparison. I wonder why there is such a difference between cars of the same make? I think my Cup is about average, it is reasonably quick, but certainly not one of the fastest around.

Hehe well guys, my car is not with me anymore, so I guess the clock is now ticking..... thread to be started shortly with pictures being taken during the work :D

the point is if youre going to spend 13k on a cup and then 5k making it faster, why not just spend 18k on a proper fast car and be done with it.

Right im off to fit a turbo to an Escort van!!!! (i mean whats the point)

The element of suprise might have something to do with it. One would expect performance from what we believe to be a proper fast car.

I dream of a 4x4 twin turbo 480 bhp mid engined Trabant. :D

because puttinf throttle bodies on isnt a valid exuse for robbing a band (well, to teh police it aint) and have you even had a peak at the electronics side of things..........that ECU........cahnge it and your windscreen wipers wont work, dont change it and it wont run, half and half and its all freaking flashing all the time.

Whats the problem, well.........its just not feasable at teh moment, have a good long think and you might see............

ive heard the same and i see enough of them at work every day but the 19s look soooooooo much better, id have the 19s day to day and a set of 18s for the track, job done :D
