Shattered Disc and caliper

What would cause a rear brake disc and caliper to shatter during normal driving conditions ?
Car is an 'x' plate clio sport 172. I've manged to source replacement parts but I'm concerned about why it happened in the first place!
Car was driving fine and had just rounded a gentle corner ...when a loud bang signaled the break up of disc / caliper / pads ........ and flying parts also burst the tyre and damage inside of the alloy !

Seized caliper. Never heard of a caliper shattering though.

Your are lucky, it could have been a lot worse.

Ive seen it when the Disc is too thin and simply shatters. also i have seen it on a bent stub, on a track day a lad replaced his with a one from a scrap yard as he crossed the threads on the hub nut, and it snapped two discs. he replaced this and it was ok.

or as has been mentioned lack of service and ba ck to my first post disc worn very thin
