SLIDE in the wet

I just bought my 172ff last month and have been out in it for the first in the wet, it has not filled me with confidence as it tends to slide a lot when coming out of tight corners or roundabouts.. Does anyone else find this happening?
I take it a decent set of tyres will help..Advice anyone. apart from slowing down

such wide tyres on a small car means that the load of the car is distributed over a larger surface area, narrower rain tyres would greatly imporve performance.

But it is normal for the 1*2's to keep you on your toes in the wet.

Michelin Pilot Exalto/Sports are the best road tyre imo. Grip come rain or shine.

ive only just got used to it

Looks like i'll just have to go out tonight on a quiet twisty B road and have some fun getting used to it untill i purchase some new tyres

when you say slide out of corners i take it you mean understeer ?

i find mine very twitch under breaking in the wet from triple figures, the back has started coming round a couple of times, pretty cool actually

always do all your hard fast breaking in a straight line , that was the best tip i ever had in my younger days when i had a mk2 golf gti with disks all round and no abs, i had loads of arse out braking moments and spun it twice under breaking whilst racing mates (all on private roads of course)

but the golf 2's were worlds away from the newer clios in terms of breaking performance and handeling, the clios being alot more forgiving and having abs albeit in non cup form

yes these ^^^^ are ment to be best suited tyre for 1*2s, thus the 182 cup come with them standard iirc? Must be pretty stonking, but come at a premium!!

I have conti sport contacts all round (standard on the 172FF i believe), and dry grip is very plentiful, and wet grip seems good too! miles better then the kuhmo extas (sp?) i had on the front before. Never had any scary moments in the wet so far so they'll do me fine, only around the £45 mark/corner all in too.... quite a bargain!

i spun mine once you just tend to learn what its doing the longer you have it. always show a little caution in the wet though

They're not suited for the 182. They're just very good tyres. Exaltos are 16 and 15 inch. Sports are 17inch and above.

everytime it rains i have fond memories of my 172 cup, and the comparitvly goliath levels of wet grip it had.

its no biggie mate as long as you dont over react. ie slightly steer into it whilst releasing the brake slightly and reapplying

without trying to sound like a big headed t**t, i just do these things naturaly now after 10 years of owning fast cars fwd, rwd and 9 years in the motor trade. i picked up some good things from a lad i used to work with at VW, he raced mk2 escorts and was one of the most skillfull road drivers ive ever been in with. bit of a nutter tbh 70mph tail out fun in a 200bhp n/a cossie powered mk2 escort did make the old ring piece twitch

I have pretty much worn out shite Nexan tyres on the rear (came with the car, keep meaning to get round to changing them...). 'Interesting' is a word that comes to mind in the wet heh.

LOL I found my 172 more scary in the wet then a buddy's 1.2. The 172 is more tricky when it goes. Both 172 and 1.2 understeer well, but when the back-end comes around you know the difference. Made some nice 4 wheel slides with the 1.2

I am glad I can rely on my ABS/ESP, which works really well.

Yes.

When I said Sport, that meant Pilot Sport2 tyres. Can't get them under 17 inch.

Driving in the wet without having pants changing moments is just a case of being sensible with your throttle pedal.

Jump on it mid corner and you'll know about it....jump off it mid corner and you'll know about it even more.

Of course, being a Cup owner you also have to reconsider jumping on the brake pedal....but then again you shouldn't be driving fast enough for it to come to that.

Ditto, still rockin proxes on the dyna. used 2 front tyres in 4 months. best tyres i ever put on it.

Dan speaks sense. If you must drive quick in the wet then make it smooth and progressive imputs....don't saw away at the wheel and definitely don't have club feet.

The back end can get a bit twitchy, if you're not careful, but other than that I found handling in the wet reasonably safe. Mine also behaved very well in the snow...

i got these on my 1.2 they are proper good i can hit corners just as fast in wet as in dry hardly any difference
