sound deadening/proofing

  Fabia VRS
About to start my boot install, and i'm building some wooden boxes to hold my subs, do i have to line them with some sort of sound deadening or proofing material?

Ive been told dynamat is good but it is also pricey, does anyone else have any other preferences or anything?

Thanks

Jordon

You don't line the boxes with it. The dynamat type stuff is for putting on panels of your car to add weight to them to deaden the sound. There are loadsssss of cheaper alternatives to dynamat. I'd base my opinion on each materials weight per m2.

The only stuff I've seen put inside the wooded boxes is a cotton wool like wadding material which in effect slightly reduces the capacity of your box but apparently makes the bass a bit tighter/punchier.

When building your boxes I'd seal them with no nails or caulk/acrylic as well as screwing them together. And don't forget if the boxes are large to use bracings inside and don't use less than 18mm thick MDF

ive managed to find most of those things out, but im not a massive DIY person so its all helpful! boxes will be holding 12" subs so would they need bracings?

A few people ive spoke to also said about using ply instead of MDF. good or bad idea?

No. Not unless the boxes are huge which I doubt they will be for 12s else you'll have too much air.

Bad idea imo. You won't find any "proper" boxes made out of ply!

+1 on what the other james said, loads of help on there.
