Stopping stone chips

  Ziel Nurburgring

Anyone got any good ideas on stopping them? I drive to work on the mway most mornings and my last car looked like it had been in a drive-by with all the holes in the front! And i wouldnt want my new like toy to get all scratchde up now would i?

Drive slower is about the only way I have ever found to lessen chips. Sometimes chips just cant be avoided when they fly up from other cars in front.

Or try Armour All or similar product that covers the panels in a stone resistant film.

(good stuff but it costs for a body shop to remove should a panel need repairing then you need it re-applied after ) ££££

BTW their claims of "Almost invisible film" is a long way off Almost LOL

I know americans stick those covers over the front. just has the holes for head lights etc.

Cling film might help, if you stretch it tightly, it should look like your car is very highly polished!!

:p

Just keep a big gap in front of the cars in front at speed and try not to use it a days when the road has been gritted. If theres loads of traffic and Im in the Willy, I pull into the inner lane and stick at 55 with loads of space in front of me. If its rainy or the roads been gritted, I take the Volvo instead.

Or get something called helicopter tape. It is the same stuff that they cover helicopter blades in to stop them becoming damaged.

I am having the Cup front end and back aches (chipped from wide alloys chucking up road sh*t to wide back arches - bugs me when I polish it) freshened up and will be getting some of this to keep the car mint.

I wonder if this is the same as the "Leading edge tape" or "anti errosion tape" (same stuff - different name) that we use at work (Passenger aircraft engineering)? a clear plastic sticky tape about 1mm thick on 3"wide rolls. If it is, then it would stop chips but cosmetically it would look terrible and after time it discolours and takes on a yellow tint.

Can depend on colour of paint. According to my boss who used to work for Nissan car factory, black and red paints are softer than silver paint. Due to the pigments and chemicals in paint. My mk2 172 is balck and is badly affected - nothing to do with 36000 miles in 18 months though!;)

The darker the paint the softer it is as it has more pigment. White is the hardest paint. So if you want to reduce stone chips get a white car!!

u can buy a clear sticky film from demon tweaks that you stick on the car, if done right u cant really tell its there, if done wrong looks like a bag of sh*t...

I am getting my back quarters, bumper and sills painted on Tuesday. And I have ordered the rear quarter protectors off the new laguna, and will cut them to fit the arch of the Clio. Just clear, heavy duty see through plastic that prevents stone chips. £17.50 at pop!

There really is no answer to stone chips, only wax your car once a week. hard work, but if you want your car to have a resistance to stonechips, then this is the only way.
