tapping on idle when engines warm... cup 172

  Clio 172 cup
sorry if this is a quite a common question... but this is my 1st clio and dont really know where to start. Ive done searches on here and it seems to be pointing towards the dephaser. Tapping only happens when the engines up to temp on idle it does speed up when i pick the revs up but it gets hard to hear over the exhaust. Just want to be sure before i go buying parts. Cambelt and aux belt was changed 4k ago and the cars done 85k if that makes any difference?

thanks

They all say it leads to the dephaser. I too had all my belts etc done without the dephaser when i " tapping " started.

All i did was Check my carbon cannister ( behind front bumper drivers side ). Pulled it apart. Cleaned the connections up etc etc and put it all back togther. Let her warm up, Revved it, let it come to idle, and nothing. Been fine ever since. I did all this afeter having my dephaser done so maybe worth just checking it first.

Hoe this helps.

Could be a number of things tbh mate with all the sensors and that in the engine bay. Only thing I can suggest is getting a airline in there to try and get the excess water out. WD40 or GT85 would be another thing to try as they disperse water. As for the tapping I'm going to give the connections on my carbon cannister a clean I'll post on here later on with the outcome

Firstly - You're a very naughty boy and don't do that again!

Secondly - Remove the upper inlet plenum and the plug leads then look down the plug bores... I bet they're swimming in water! Expel the water and your misfire will disappear fo'sho

took the canister off yesterday afternoon to find that it had two holes in it! cleaned up the connections, taped up the holes and the tapping seems to have stopped :)

I have that tapping, its worth looking at. Where exactly is it and what does it look like? You say behind the bumper, is it under the lights?
How many leads into and out of it. I've looked in the guide section and found nothing.
I'm hoping its not my dephaser!

the easy way to check if it's your dephaser is open the bonnet, get the car up to temperature and get someone to sit in the car and rev the engine gently back and forth from 1000 to say 3500 rpm while you listen to the engine. At about 2500 rpm the tapping will stop (significantly diminish) if it's the dephaser. Also as it crosses the 2500 point if you listen carefully you can hear the dephaser switching, hard to describe but you'll know it when you hear it.

The dephaser (please don't shoot me if i've remembered this wrong) is part of the variable valve timing system VVT and basically stops the car being too sensitive to drive at low revs (around town etc) but plenty of power when you give it the boot, so basically two 'settings/profiles'. When the car is off or at idle the dephaser pulley is in one setting but when the revs reach 2,500 the dephaser switch opens and oil goes to the dephaser pulley which unlocks and does something to the camshaft which gives more power (valve overlap rings a bell but i'm not sure exactly what). When the revs drop back down below 2500 it switches back and the pulley/Camshaft returns to the Normal position.

When mine was knackered and a specialist pointed out the fact they said they'd not heard of one failing completely but that it was possible and that if one did fail properly you can probably kiss goodbye to your cam belt etc.

Oh and I should have said if you search on here and youtube there's a few vids of folks and their knackered dephasers so you can compare the sounds

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nrhsjsM2_0 this is a perfect example

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1Mb0jH548o - same car as the next clip but is before the car is up to temp and the rattling isn't so bad.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iu6bWRvOnNU - same as above clip but car now up to temp and you can hear it's completely and utterly buggered you can hear the noise as the dephaser locks/unlocks when he revs the engine at about 33 secs

Cheers for the info mate. Everythings pointing towards the dephaser ie. noise goes at 2500 and it only makes the noise when the engines warm.
Having said that, when I've had other work done on the car at two different times, I've pointed the noise out to the mechanics
and they have both said its not the dephaser. While the car does have the 'diesel' type sound, its not as loud as the videos and
its not coming from dephaser area. Its more like between the second and third cylinder area, one mechanic thinks it may be the
hydraulic lifters. I'm trying to rule everything else out before I fork out £600 for a new dephaser and belts!

yea pretty much just took the drivers side headlight out to get to the top of it... unplugged the vaccum pipe and the sensor. Sprayed it with electrical cleaner and put it back together. Tapping hasnt come back yet so hopefully that solved it. I wanted to rule out everything i could before getting the dephaser done aswell as the car had the cam belt and that done just before i brought it. Hope this helps
