I know my temp sender has been a bit wrong for a while as when it got just above normal opperating temp the fan would kick in and the dial would drop to zero and then when it got colder at normal temp the fan cuts out and the dial goes back to normal, but the dial has always dropped to zero and "behaved" normally, but dops to zero when the fan kicks in. The only time it has worked when I had a coolant leak and it read a true reading- chuffin' hot!
Then yesterday I was driving, an hour motorway and dual carriage way at 70mph so not pushing the car, stopped to get some fuel and then went to pull off and noticed by dial was sat just below where the dots double up, so readign really hot, got a little worried as the car was only sat for like 5mins and didnt stop on my journey in traffic or anything. Then drove for another 15mins home, some of which was a dual track and again didnt stop so the air should have cooled it, but nope, just stayed at really hot. Got home turned the car off and the gauge didn't drop to zero, even with no key in. Chekced the coolant, had some in there, above minimum, but topped it up this morning.
Got in the car this morning and this is what I was presented with on the dial:
basically where it was last night
Turned the ignition on and it dropped a little, car had been sat still for 12hrs with the engine off
ummm.... On the way to work was running just above horizontal and didn't move. Drove home and still doing the same, stopped off to get some bread and then got back in and it seems to be fine, has dropped to zero with the ignition off.
The only thing I can think of is that it was raining hard yesterday, sould it have got wet and decided to have a funny 5mins?
