Top Gear online 197 Cup review

  Disco 5 ,Monaro VXR
good review that. id like someone to review it against a trophy. but i guess lee can do that when he gets his new cup

Sounds superb, hopefully it lives upto that write up. Can't agree about the spoiler though, I think the backend looks very...ehmm van like without a flick to the roofline.

Be a great second hand purchase I hope when I'm in the position to warrant one.

I did laugh at the comment about the spoiler. I agree with him.

I won't be doing as many track days this year. Buying a house and car within 12 months of each other mean I can't afford the extra running costs of track days. But I'm sure one or two will creep in.

  Nippy white cup
I have to say after seeing 1 in blue and 1 in LY both with spoilers I think I prefer it...finishes the back end off nicely imo

Good review. Although it makes me laugh how they all love the 197 now. When it first came out it was too refined, bit gutless etc. Although this was a cup review, the drivetrain is exactly the same :S

Trophy has been rated best hot hatch ever and he fails to mention it when talking about past Clios pffff.

Exactly what i thought when i read it.

Mentions the Golf Mk1, Pug 205 GTi 1.9 and says the Williams (?!) was the pinnacle of the hot hatch but then neglects to mention any of the Mk 2 sports!

Err hello? 172 Cup? 182 Cup? Trophy???!

^^ exactly!

Personally, I don't think the 197 has much on the likes of a Trophy / 172 Cup much better performance cars.

I would of liked to of seen a 192 with the MK2 chasis, still don't like the new model, don't think I ever will.

With regards to performance I would think there is nothing in it between Trophy/172 Cup/R27/197 Cup.

Any additional weight the 197 might have is countered by better brakes and quicker turn in.

Nothing in it at all.

It's suprising how different the cup is in comparison to the standard 197FF, try it you will be shocked.

I did try the R27 and its noticeably different to 197 FF in the chassis department.

I totally respect it as a piece of engineering...so much so i very nearly got a 197 Cup....but i still don't think its light enough and it pays the price, not thru its speed but its liking for petrol.

Mine is just as fast but i can still average 38 mpg....

I bet but its the others things that I don't like, such as the way the car looks, feels, interior etc... just a huge fan of 182/172s because it offers you so much in nearly everything department.

Its only spring rates etc. Its not a major difference like the 172 cup was. That had a decent weight reduction, wider track different caster angles etc. The 197 cup has lower and stiffer suspension. Thats it. 20kg is nothing imo, what, half a tank of fuel?
