Trackcar project " Another low budget toy"

  Clio 172
Hi guys Me and my mate have just bought a new car to use as a road legal trackcar.

Not looking to spend a great deal of money on it staright away until we have done a few trackdays.

Plans are get the car cleaned up and do the following.

Get it lowered
fit bucket seats
harnesses
Different exhaust
Different air filter.
New tyres.

Hopefully that will be enought o get us started.

cheers just checked the front brakes and it looks like its just had pads and discs.

So think we'll just clean them up a bit and try it on track with the standard setup.

Managed to get the seats out at the weekend to make room for two buckets.

Standard air box out and KnN fitted. Temporary measure as I think we might gut the headlight and turn it into a cold air feed eventually.

Brakes, pads, disks and fluid should be your first port of call. Some nice Ferodos, PF, pagids should do the trick.

The immortal words. Wish I had a quid for every time I read that on the numerous car forums that I visit.

Welcome and nice looking Clio

Haha, aint that the truth! Its neverending. So far so good tho, going to sell the standard interior and put the money towards some bucket seats. If anyone knows of any for sale or wants to return their car to standard then please get in touch. Got another few parts to go on the car soon :)

  Clio 172
Wheels off today , think we might sell these and put 15's on it for track.

if your going to gut the headlights, my advise would be to sell the xenons for circa £100-150 and but some lights from a 1.2/cup for £40 or so

  Clio 172
Cheers Jared, thats the whole idea, a bit of fun. Probably give a few of the readers a laugh along the way aswell :)

Thanks for the advice Tunst. The eagle eyed of you will see on the 2nd picture that the ns headlight has a big crack, chunk missing. Its already been taken care of. We put in another headlight and will get another to replace the other Xenon and sell it on. Leaving the other to butcher for a cold air feed. We thought about swapping the glass but unsure if its easy enough?

Heres the wee car after it got its first wash. Needs a really good clean and maybe a machine polish but we'll get that after its track prepared.

Picked up a set of second hand APEX springs.

So got them fitted today.

Checked the brakes and the fronts are brand new discs and pads so they will stay on until its done its first trackday.

Now just the issue of finding a set of 15" wheels and sorting out seat subframes.

Looks like we either buy OMP subframes or make up custom ones. Are there any other choices?

The start of another good project, shall keep an eye on this. The clios are such a good starting point for a track car aren't they :)

  Clio 172
Hi Rob, your right, We were looking for a car to use as a track car and when the Clio came up it was ideal. I knew they had a good following on plenty of forums but didnt realise just how much until we were looking for parts and info on the best options. Probably every question ive asked on google has re directed me back to this site! Its brilliant and full of knowledge. We keep missing out on sets of bucket seats and wheels tho :(

Slightly more progress this weekend.

Brakes getting cleaned up ready to be re fitted

And got our grubby hands on two seats today. Now just to either buy subframes or make our own. Decisions!?!?

Didn't get as much done last lately as we'd hoped. This working for a living is holding us back.

Managed to source a set of 15" turbines. " cheers Djw Dave"

A tad rough I must admit but nothing a little spit and polish won't cure. Next day after we got them they look like this.

more pictures of them shortly once we get them on the car. Haven't had it on the ground since we lowered it so hopefully she'll sit nice and low now.

Stripped all the interior out so it looks a bit bare inside just now. Hopefully get something soon we can make very lightweight doorcards from.

Took the air inlet off to change the plug leads and realised it was disgusting so giving it a bit of a clean up at the same time.

Did the inlet matt black but I don't like it. Just doesn't look right so I'll change that colour tomorrow.

Should hopefully have the new wheels fitted and the seat subframes made by the weekend. Maybe.....

  Clio 172
Matt black wasn't cutting it so changed the inlet again.

Tyres are on the wheels and should be on the car tomorrow.

looking great! Especially liking the inlet!

Only downside are the T1R's - coming from experience they are ok on track a 6-7/10ths but any more than that and they are useless

  Clio 172
Cheers Russ, we will see how we get on with them. I saw a few threads had mixed reviews about them. I have T1Rs on my P1 but its not been on track, fine for road use tho.

good luck, good progress so far. wheels and inlet look great!

As someone else mentioned, I dont rate the t1rs as on track. federal rsr's are same price and far far better option.

Cheers Porkie. We had looked at the Federals and will probably go for them in the future. The T1R were £35 a corner so that swayed the decision to get us going and see how we get on on track. We are both trackday novices so hopefully they will do us fine for a while until we see where we are at (hopefully not spinning off into oblivion haha). Thanks for all the advice from everyone, its much appreciated :)

Cheers Danny, the drivers side xenon is available. The PS one had a crack in the glass. It could be fixed if your handy swapping the glass/plastics over.

Looking good, thanks again for the interior I haven't had a chance to clean/fit it yet, few pics coming next week. Top lads too for having had bigger offers on the interior and refused them having said you would sell to me initially.

There are some honest people left around.

No problem, a deals a deal. Look forward to seeing the pictures. We couldnt believe the weight in the interior once we started taking it out, especially all the seatbelts.

Anyone weighed it all once its out?
