Tuning Potential of the 182

  Zetec-S
Hi,
I'm considering the 182 as my next car. I currently drive a MK5 Zetec-S which i love to bits but the powers really not there.

I'm sure this question comes up alot, i'v had a quick search but can't find much. Please don't get angry. lol

But, how tunable is the 2.0 engine? And at what price. Whats the deal with turbo'ing/supercharging them?

For example you can get 150bhp from the ZS but it will cost you near on £5k, for cams, tb's, remap, bigger internals etc etc.

Thanks in advance, Wayne

Not a lot of potential, unless you have a few thousand beer tokens to throw at it. Even then, not a whole lot of increase. A turbo can be had for even more tokens but is it really wirth it?

you can basically go as far as your budget allows. Throttle bodies then turbo are the most popular. Turbo you get more power, but less reliability and really need to think about running a steel bottom end, which you dont need to do with bodies unless you want more power.

Cams are another option and are cheaper to do, but personally for the price of cams, fitting and remap I'd just put a stand alone on instead and get someone good to map it.

Buy something with the 1.8t engine in (leon, Golf Gti, Ibiza, Octy VRS) if you want tuneability. The 182 is tuneable but its expensive for not alot of gains, I believe the turbo conversion is around £6k that gets you 260bhp. ITBs are less than that probably £3k that give yous around 220bhp.
You could buy a Leon Cupra R and for £400 (revo remap) that can be upped to 260bhp+.

Blood out of a stone.

Decat, exhaust and some form of closed IK follwed by a remap to tie it all up. I'd leave it at that. Anything else is a waste, unless you're Johnny Bagsacash, and go for ITB's.

If you want a Renault and easy ponies, buy a Megane.

Thanks!

I'v got the budget of a brand new ST, so about 11k. Thing is, somethings drawing me to the 182! Gah! Its not the looks as i think the ST looks much nicer, but maybe if i get the ST, i'll miss the power the 182 could offer me! Im going on testdrives tommorow so i'll know more!

Whats the most sort after 182 then? Which of the packs? etc
Whats the most sort after colour? I think my fav is the red!
Theres some bargains on ph, 5k for 182's for example, maybe i'll get a cheaper one and spend the other 5k on it.

Whats insurance like? Similiar to ST insurance?

182 with Cup Packs, or Trophy.
Insurance Group 17 IIRC, so depends on how old you are and your driving history!

pretty tuned as standard, chuck 2.5k at it and you can see around 200bhp

Old story mate...

There NO substitute for cubic capacity, if you wanna go fast buy a 1998/9 Impreza Turbo or Mitsi EVO, you can get them for the same money and you can tune it to the nuts and itll go like a scalded cat:eek:

Naturally asspirated cars are a pain in the arse to tune mate, Note most Honda owners dont get an awful lot of gains from the money they throw at them.

  clio trophy No56
Turbo fitted for about £5000, depends on the boost for bhp, average probably about 240bhp.
Throttle bodies, cams and exhaust, see about 220bhp for £4000.
Remap, exhaust and induction about 200bhp max for £1000.

I would go for a Trophy, obviously coz i own one, or a 182 with all cup packs.

Like you said 182 cupped for about £5000 - £8000.
Trophy with high miles for £7400, low miles for £8500 - £9000.

Insurance isnt too bad, depends on how many NCB you have. Group 16.
The Trophy is costing me £700 with breakdown cover, 3 years NCB.

The ST feels limp in comparison, and wheezy at the top end. Drive a 182.

17 :O

I'm going to be 20/2yncb in Jan which is the sort of time i'll be getting a new car, maybe a group 17 insurance car is a bit out of my league. Looks like its gnna have to be the ST!

I'll report back sometime next week once i'v test driven them both. If i dress up nice can i go into a renaut dealer with a 172/182 and ask for a test drive or will i need to book it?

Yeah wear a dress and some lipstick:rasp:

Just kiddn mate, nah i doubt you will need to book it as its not a new car.

Id check insurance on the 172/182 first, the ST was nearly £700 cheaper to insure for me:eek:

they let me test drive the 172 cup and a 182, im 19 and got previous experience through work with high performance cars (works car is a golf gti 230 edition) and my LY is 1500 fully comp cheapest anywhere!

Based on looks, i'd choose the clio. I just hate fiesta zetec s's & the idiots round my way who have them (im not calling all zetec s drivers idiots btw, just my local boys)

Same age and ncb as me, pay 1,200 with adrian flux.

shop around best advice i can give, my previous insurance ( 220 bhp ibiza) wouldnt insure me on the clio :s

Wow, i'm paying 1,100 now on my £3k 1.6 lol, if it only goes up a couple of £100 maybe i will get a 182!

"if" being the improbable word:rasp:

Check it out mate, the Clio is a b**ch to insure if your not 25 without 4ncb

not that bad tbh, Williams is group 17 and I was only paying £700 my first year of having it with 3 years NCD or something. I know with 4 years NCD it was £422 fully comp with protected NCD. My 172 now with ITB's, Omex, suspension cams, etc etc all listed mods costs me £556 with track cover.
