tunning a valver worth it

  clio 16v

i have just been completely toasted by two chavs in an RST, and im not happy!! is it worth tunning my 16v engine, or saving up for a willy conversion? which will yield better power gains?

You could have a williams lump and still get blew by an rst there highly tuneable

are they? they have less power as standard than a 16v i think, but i guess the turbo makes them respond better to mods!
saving for a willy lump it is then...

are they not 130 bhp? valver 137bhp,as said you could go the williams route and still get blown into the weeds, there potential is far greater than with a n/a lump, get nos,i had it on my valver, massive differance with 50 bhp jets, get a 20valve turbo lump in it (sure someone off here could do it for ya)

A lightly modified RST will awalys beat you!

200bhp out of one of those for practically no money...

As iPap said - a reliable 200BHP is easy - you can get more too if you tune them well, there was one bored out to a 1.8 which had 220bhp at low boost.

Its actually not that easy to get 200bhp in a RST. It can be done but its not as cheap and as simple as most think. 170 is fairly easy though!

I used to love my valver and when it was chipped, filtered and had the exhaust and decat it didnt go to bad. I never thought there could be much difference between it and a willy. Then i drove one.......lol

The willy lump is the way to go! Such a different drive and you have power on tap at almost any point in the rev range unlike the 1.8 that you have to rag the sh*t out of! Cams, chip, filter ect and your looking at a quick car!

Im getting me and willy hybrid soon! Should be fun once it has cams to go with its other mods! :D

The rst was obviously no where near standard then !
if it was you would have p*ssed on it (imo they arent that fast at all - as standard, you have to remember as well that the latest ones are 1990 so they will 15 years old now) so unless it has been properly mainted most run like a sack of sh*t now !

I know what most rst turbos are like as i spent 4 months looking for one !
then bought my valver instead, as i was fed up with looking at thrashed to death, cr*p examples.

If you want to beat one, id say get a willy lump put in, then mod that, chip, cams etc.

My mate has a tuning company he modifies rsts.Theres so much you can do 1.8zvh conversion,2.1bottom end hes had pulling 293bhp on the rollers, full 2.0 16v zetec turbo conversion.

I wouldnt feel to bad about getting beat by an rst my mate used to have a magenta 4x4 saphy cosworth which wasnt standard and he got beat by an rst in the rain it came past him and the wheels were still spinning

^^^^^^^^

exactly, the trouble with rsts is you never quite know whats been done to them, my friend had the same engine as above 2ltr zetec turbo and just looked standard so i wouldnt feel bad m8.

even if it wasnt a zetec engined 1 then the standard lump is very easy to get 170bhp by just fitting air filter exhaust and chip, then winding the boost up.

1 thing to remember is it wont last that long if it was a chav driving it with the boost wound up, so next time you see him he mite be at the side of the road broken down and you can just drive past laughing

  Not a Clio

i wouldnt worry. Lets face it, at the end of the day a valver is hardly the fastest thing on the road these days.

No matter what car you have (unless you are super rich) there will always be cars faster than yours driven by many different types of people.

Just enjoy what you have now :)

Nah i was in my mates weird mitsi mirage. You probs saw it, looks a bit like a evo (well kinda). It has a evo front bumper and black 17s.

The cup was looking nice and low though! Did you buy it from the dealers in Bristol? If so i think i saw it when it was forsale there. Remember the plate!

Ill probs take a trip down to weston soon though when i have the willy hybrid! :D

theres a man here selling a volvo with the 1.7t engine for £250 the whole car is there complete, alot easier to tune...

u33db, what engine you talking about? whatever engine it is im pretty sure you coudlt ake the restriction out/get a new ecu

The volvo lumps are strange. Theres deffo some limit that doesnt let them get to big power. Something about the ecu and boost?

The ecu doenst like over 1 bar boost you have to go to stand alone to crank the 1 bar limit I think.

You can get round the restriction i know someone whos got one in a van ,i think the standard ecu senses the higher boost when its turned up and shuts it back down.

Im sure the 21 turbos are the same until you chip them

Youl never beat a well modded rst on the road even with a well modded willy engine imo!!!

Mate has a 250bhp+ one with 300lbs of torque..............Total cost of around 24k since its been off the road for the past year!!!

Fully refurbed, inside out and engine...................Il tryn get some pics sometime as its got to be one of the best.............I personally wouldve bought an Escort Cossie and modded that it but it was all a hobby for him and its rewarded him in a way!!!

On topic..........Willy lumps probably the cheapest route to more power and a better all round drive!!!
