Upgrading RAM on a Dell inspiron 6000

I've got an old Dell lap top which is painfully slow at even the most basic things, probably due to having a whopping 512MB RAM. So a couple of questions:

1 - Can these lap tops take up to 2GB's of RAM?

2 - How easy is it to insert new ram?

3 - Is anyone on CS based in / around Manchester who wants to do it for me?

As I have said before, I'm a complete techno-phobe, I just want my lap top to work a bit quicker on-line and this seems like the easiest and cheapest solution. Am I right?

if you go to www.crucial.com/uk and download the scanner, it will tell you how much is in there and give a comparable display to show you current performance, and predicted performance if you had an increase of memory.

Cheers - It says the 2GB that SC03OTT linked.

It looks like a very simple job, but I'm a complete fat handed tw@t, so no doubt will balls it up doing it myself.

Cool, well I'll probably get it ordered tomorrow and have a blast next week.

What's the worst that can happen???

I presume when you put the new RAM in, the lap top just boots up as normal? You don't have to install anything?

if it is under warranty... go on their online chat support, tell them that you have tried known good ram and it worked but yours is faulty and they send you more in the post without taking the originals back.

i do this at work all the time although ive never blagged any i didnt need yet lol

I've got an old 5160, if its anything like mine you just undo the memory cover on the bottom (watchmakers phillips screwdriver) then it should all be self explanatory. You won't get it wrong, i promise you.

Lol, it's 5+ years old mate. I just don't want to shell out for a new lap top, so if I can make it last a little while longer, then I'm all good.

That does sound exactly how it is.

I'll probably have a blast at it and see what happens.

Cheers for all the replies.

If you're still struggling m8 - drop me a PM. I'm just outside Bury. I can meet you somewhere to get it sorted. :)

You will probably be notified on bootup that there has been a hardware change on the system and if I recall it asks you to strike the F2 key to continue as normal or offers you some other options. Just continue as normal :)

Arrived today, took me 10 minutes to install it. Bit of a flase start when I thought I'd fcuked it up, but had another look and realised I'd not pushed it in properly, sorted that and it's away.

Cheers for the comments all.
