Wet sanding? How easy?

Ali

The old dears gone and bumped the R32 into a pillar in the supermarket. I've pc'd the area and it's come up fairly well, but there's still a wee scuff. I.e you can feel it with your nail.

Whats the script with wet sanding, i.e is it easy to do, what grit do you use? 1500,2000?

I always wanted to practice before i put it into action...Esp bein the folks day-to-day car!

I did a repair on my car Ali on a very conspicuos area (just on the A-pillar) and 95% invisible - only I know its there!

The damage, which looked like a key or something, although not sure how it could be done by accident there, had gone back to the paint. First of all I polished around the area to get it back flat and clean. Then I filled in the area using a cocktail stick, and then the clearcoat. Left that for a couple of days, and returned using some 3M wet/dry paper which I think was 2000 grit IIRC. Soaked it overnight in some shampoo and water solution, and VERY VERY lightly glanced it over the offending area, checking after every couple of passes, untill the paint and clearcoat felt flush against the rest of the paint.

I then cleaned it all up and was horrified to see LOADS of very fine scratches. But, with a bit of Menzerna IP on a 4" pad it brought back to a great glossy finish which was well blended in, my dad who works in the motor industry was very impressed as he didn't think I would be able to repair it.

Definitely would recommend having a go prior to the bodyshop visit, but it depends how big the damage is really I guess.

Old man's got a shed of a merc in the bottom garage about to get restored, he said practice on that first, so it's defo worth a shot, and to be fair if things go well i mite even attempt a wee mark on the vee...."Maybe!!" ;)

Worth a squirt. Where the damage was on my car was highly visible, and black shows up more defects than blue. Just take your time with the wet/dry paper, even though it feels like it isn't abrasive it is!

Also, before I used the paper (Which was well lubed due to soaking overnight) I sprayed the surface with some QD just to reduce friction a bit more, as I wasn't sure how it would work.

Ali,

Get yourself some Meguiars 3000 grit W&D and a foam sanding block.
Soak W&D overnight in a soapy solution.
Get yourself a spray bottle with warm soapy water to apply to the area you are working.............make sure you keep it well lubed up.
Work the paper in one direction only (dont scrub back and forth) and take your time.

Buff off any sanding marks with a polisher and you should be done :)

Anymore help required drop me a pm
