what elbow and filter for in front of battery airfilter

  monaco 172
I see the new must have air filter set up seems to be an open cone in front of the battery.

What's a good elbow and cone that doesn't cost 167 quid to make? I saw some good home made ones but can't find the thread to the parts used.

i got mine of ebay, was 18 quid for an alloy elbow, 70mm diameter, 90 degree bend and 150mm leg lenght, although some people might want shorter, but you can cut it

egnor the green extention on the filter, i cut the elbow short because im getting a slim but long green cotton filter to go in rather than that horrible dirty blue thing lol

So as long as the filter, silicone bend and the cone filter are all 70mm then it should all for together nicely?

Are these the sort of things I could pick up In a motor factors like motor world? I hate waiting on item from eBay lol.

Does anybody know what size breather filter I need to order?

Meh i just bought the k tec one, expensive and you can 'make' your own but the ktec one looks better just for a start  and the noise ohh the noise

Syko that's brill mate thanks.

Sj2112, I would buy the ktec as I know it will fit spot on but its a lot of money for what it is.

I recon all this home made kit for about 60 quid should perform just as good and also sound just as nice as the ktec, after all its just an open cone with a fancy bend.

i prefere the sound of mine to the ktec one, it sounds more or less same, just very slightly louder

Very true, i did think wtf have i just done when i bought mine as they aren't cheap. :)

So you bought the ktec one didn't like it then bought the 'DIY' parts...for a fair test :p

haha noooo ive herd the ktec ones before and loved it, and thought i would make my own, thinking it would be the same but there ever so slightly louder, no idea why tho

So before I order,

The cone, bend and alloy bend all need to be 70mm, then the breather needs to be whatever size I measure in the morning

K-tec uses a better quality filter than the cheapo ebay specials. the best option would be an itg or Ramair open cone as these will generate a better sound

Bought off Danith for 45 bucks. Best money ive spent on the car so far!

The elbow is a Hillpower one with th fitment there for the breather.

i havent got one no cos my silicone bend has the breather there. you can mount them anywhere really, next the the battery or header tank i would have thought best

Im using a bit of expansion foam that i stole from my work. We use it for putting between concrete walls etc when we build them to let the walls expand.
Its about an inch thick and its doing the trick very well tbh!

Could probably bodge it by drilling a hole in the new silicone bend and using the t piece out of the oem bend if it comes out.

last question, im about to order all the bits, but what do i use to support the wieght of the filter? Or do people just let it hang in front of the battery?

The silicone is strong enough to hold it there but you could make a bracket to support it on the ecu bracket

Cool thanks guys.

Im struggling working out what size breather filter to get.

Does it need to go onto the end of the current pipe from from the breather or do i need to scrap the pipe and put the breather filter directly onto the engine in which case a 14mm internal diameter breater would be fine.

But if the breather filter neeeds to go onto the end of the current pipework then none of them seem to be the right size.

cool.

Actually, ive just realised.

Surely i could have the standard 182 plastic bend then just have the new aluminium bend coming out of the standard 182 bend into the cone filter? Or would the 182 standard bend be too long?

I remember seeing someone post their DIY kit on here a while back with links to the whole kit, but I cant find it anywhere now! anyone know the thread I'm on about?

  monaco 172
Martin, thanks for that, I'll have a look but for now I'll use the standard plastic elbow with the alloy bend go in into that

Im using the standard plastic elbow, that alloy bend and that twin cone filter.

Sounds crazy, not sure on performance, hard to tell if theres any changes lol.

Fitment is a bit tight, I need to sort mine out properly and get the fusebox cover back on.
