Whats the most amount of money you've lost on a car...

  Peugeot 308
As title suggests guys.

I've wasted so much money in the past, buying - modifying/maintaining - selling (sometimes less than I paid) its beyond thinking about.

Example:

My BMW 330 - I've just sold it, but the total loss in 8 months of ownership after modifying/maintaining was £1400 ... rediculous.

Can anyone make me feel better lol?

Had 12k In my trophy once I'd put the new engine in and spent money on other bits and bobs, then it blew up again, managed to salvage 4k back off it in parts so I lost 8k and now own a clio cup :)

Bought my Z4 coupe for £24k and got rid 18 months later for £14k.

Jesus Alan, should have said, i would have bought it off you !!!!

Re: the OP, if you modify, you will generally lose money, unless you buy 2nd hand, then take it all off before you sell ...

Personally, i cant remember the last time i lost any real money on a car, im sure the M3 will change that

clio 1.8 16v paid £600 for it ,spent just over 3k on it in 4 months then sold it for 1k, and now wish i had kept it

I can match your 330 costs, my 320 has cost me £734 excluding labour as I've done it myself :( (4 months)

I dont consider mods as "lost" money. If i choose to spend money on mods thats because i can afford it. I dont expect the money back. Quite a few cars ive kept standard i've made money on.

  Volvo XC60 T8
Bought my clio for £3500, spent around £3000 on it over 18 months, then sold it for £2000 :(

Had an 05 astra 1.6 easytronic cost me £3500 with 8k and 3 years old. Blew the diff up so spent £150 on a new box and £200 for a mate to fit it. Eastronic was playing up so took it to Vauxhall who had it for 3 months and had an engineer from Germany come out to look. Took £2000 off me for all the work done. Then 2 months later wrote it off with 68k on the clock and got £3400 for it. But hey I think thats not bad for 3 years of abuse

Edit: The car was 3 years old when I brought it and I owned it for 3 years

Dont know any exact amount, but this ended up costing me a few quid when I got carried away when we rebuilt it, my mate had a bit of a "whoops" moment when driving my RS500

Then it got stolen, joyridden and blown up

Dropped about £10k

  Clio 172
My 106 Rallye was a money pit. Bought it for £2800, spent 3k on it and sold it about 9-10 months later for £2750!

Last two i've gained on though. DC5 paid £8100 for it. Spend £500 on it sold it for £7500 and made about a grand/grand and a half selling the exhaust, wheels and some other bits! My Ibiza again bought for £5500, spend £200 on it and sold it for £6200 :)

Probably still lost out over all but thats just how it is!

  Mini Cooper S
Bought my MK3 Clio from the dealers @ £7800, traded it in @ £4800.
£3000 lost in 22 months.... Probably spent about £1000 in maintenance/mods on it.
Was a good car, nothing broke on it...probs could have got an extra grand on it if I sold it privately but oh well.
Only car that I've bought and sold so far....gonna lose a f**k load on the Cooper S :(

Why?!?!

I flipped my mint 106 Quiksilver when i was 17 and never claimed, so yeah lost about £2,500

why because i was originaly keeping it then personal circumstances changed so it had to go. and i shall do it again when i manage to find a half decent one;)

  Ibiza FR Edition
Bought my 1.2 16v for £1800 18 months ago, spent no end of money on a new fuel tank, wiring loom, throttle body etc, along with the cambelt and service, spent £2000 just fixing it and only did 12000 miles, sold it to my aunty last month for £750, and that was much better than the £400 a garage offered me part ex, clearly didn't want it despite the fact by the time I was finished with it it was in great condition! Will probabaly provide thousands of miles of trouble free motoring now, which will be just my luck.

Yep, felt sick when I found out it had gone up in flames whilst being in the care of a garage for a restoration. Nice of them to tell me they had no insurance.

OUCH!!! this is why I make sure my insurance is VERY good

  172
Sounds minor compared to some but a sizeable percentage none the less. Bought the 182 for £3325, 5 months and an insurance excess later I was left with a £2300 payout. And obviously being 19 the insurance cost £1450 odd in the first place. More annoyingly with no NCB I'm back to poverty spec cars.

Safe to say 2011 was mixed year for me.

Have been told I've lost £5.5K in 2.5 years so didn't sell in the end.

My mey to not loosing /making money is do what I do, drive cars paid for by others and never sell.

  2.2 bar shed.
150 quid. Needed about 1000 quids worth of work doing to it though so it didnt really bother me.

I lost £1400 in two years on my 1.2 Clio. I should have made a profit on it too but it was my first car and a couple of 'incidents' later I could only get £2100 for it.

My 172 depreciated £700 in the 8 months I had it, although £500 of that was mods.

My Mazda 323 deprecited by £75.

All in all not too much depreciation really. Its why I tend to buy cheaper cars, there isn't much depreciation to do.

lots. scoobs, standard then spent thousands modifiying them then sold them about a year or less later costing me over 3k for the depreciation and mods alone.

  Audi A5
Haven't sold the 182 yet but after two years of ownership I predict to loose aprox £2000 so not too bad for a French car.

  Audi A5
With 197 and r26 available at around 5-6k do you think they are goin to depreciate much over the next year???

Yep new clio will be due soon which will hammer prices etc

Plus with fuel prices and tax etc unfortuantly hot hatches are getting more expensive to run hence less market hence lower prices (IMO)
