wheel refurb

haha, im in the process of doing mine, getting tyres off tmrw....

i went to halfords yesterday and overkilled.... spent £77 !!!

that was 4 large primers, 4 large gloss black, 2 laquer! lol !!! and some sandpaper!!

yea I dont think you need as much as I bought mate, quotes I were getting from good refurb companies was about £60 - £80 a wheel with tyre work, so because im doing all 4 it will save me loads of cash! :)

Ive done a set before and they came out better than new, and even 18 months after I did it not one mark, or any sign of them flaking or anything they were prestine, then I sold the car and someone even commented on them saying are they brand new wheels :)

The (all approx because i dont know correct) 550ml cans are about £5.99 in Halfords..

Im expecting to get. 2x Grey primer, 4x Colour and 2x laquer.. Then a tube of metal filler.. Expecting about £5.99

=£53.91... Am expecting to spend around the £50-60 mark.. Already have the sandpaper and masking tape.

Might do it in 2 trips, No planning it till it gets warmer...

I usually skimp with paint because im tight... But end up back at the store to buy more.. Seeing as im planning on getting these done in a day or two im just going to get what i need plus a little back up.

Professional refurb local to me is £50 a wheel so im avoiding that.

well, been doing it all day solid for about 12 hours ! got most of gloss black layers on looks mint! a few more tommorow, then end of day will lacquer :)

Yea the renault diamonds popped out of centre cap for me! :)

yea got load of photos through process, will get them all in a step by step thread in a few days when they are on the car... also painting my brake callipers too

*Mask tyre up / use painting cards around the edge.

*Mix up filler and apply if filling curbing around the lip.

*Leave to dry then sand lip so its curb free.

*If original paint is still on sand down till its keyed enough for the paint and smoothed any curbing/ rough patches.

(Jobs a lot easier with tyre off or dropped and sand blasted, Ive heard paint remover i.e. Nitromores is a pain in the ass and obviously not to be attempted with a rubber tyre on if your thinking of going that way)

* Primer > Dry > smooth >> same again if needed.

* Base colour coat until a decent covering > Dry.

* Lacquer coats (id say 2-3) Then dry.

Im probably going to wait until cured in a week then wet flat and polish up.

well finished mine today ....

...all painted, 2 layers of lacquer and were perfect.. then I was giving them another coat of laqcuer in the garage after, and didnt realise the spray can was splutting a bit, so two wheels look sort of orange peely where laquer splattered... its barely noticable... but it aint perfection.

Hopefully will be back on car thursday and ill get some photos of step by step :)

Is it hard doing it on the awkward angles?
Like how do you avoid drip and run lines when you like spray the sides of the spokes?
Is it just lots of light coats, or is there a technique?

  Focus ST170
Just lots of light coats of paint, I did 3-4 coats of paint and 3 coats of laquer.. when i did mine.. but turinis are quite easy because of the spokes. :approve:
