Whiney engine!

I've had my PH1 172 since late January and the engine has always had a slight 'whine' to it. The past week that whine has increased three fold and is starting to sound quite awful.

I had the cam belts done last month and since the noise was there, albeit slightly quieter, beforehand, I am assuming it's not that.

It increases with revs and is there both when moving and when stationary. It partially goes when the clutch pedal is depressed but it is still there, although quiter due to the rev drop I guess.

Alternator?? If so, is it worth changing?? (pig of a job I have been told).

Any ideas welcome...

Oh and by the way, I've tried it without the missus in the passenger seat and the whine is still there.

i have a similar whine that sounds like a race car differential whine, altough it's there even when the car is stationary, it also gets louder with the revs

  53 Clio's & counting
i would hazard a guess at the uax belt tensioner/pulley,my mate had the same prob on hers but hers was REALLY loud

i had that on my old 182 it was the idel pulley the got a garage to do it and they did not even charge an hours labour

ive got exactly the same problem! sounds to me like a common problem with the clio's, i know my aux belt is due though, shall try the idle pully first though :D where by is this pully? lol anyone knw?

  Lots of Alfas
As above chances are its the idler on the aux belt. Its fairly easy to change. The idler is the lowest down part of the aux belt and is a bit exposed to the elements. Failing that get them to check the water pump and power steering pump.

Ive just got mine aswell and i think i can safely say my car makes a kind of noise not too disimalar to whats being said above but i just put it down to the fact its a 2.0l and thought it would be noisy anyway, its going in for the big service (pulleys, tensioners, aux cam and timing belt etc) so ill let you know how it is when i get it back on saturday!
