Williams Gearbox Question.

I have been told i have a small leak on my near side drive shaft seal. How often should i check to see the level of the oil in the gearbox? I dont want to let it run dry, but also dont want to check it more than i need. What are the symptoms of a gearbox with low oil, and what signs are there if a gearbox is on its way out?

Cheers, its an area i know nothing about, so any help appreciated.

a first sympton would be notchy gearchanges and excessive whining noise from the gearbox.

Sorry to be stupid, but if near side means passenger side, u better sort the leak asap, cos when the inner joint blews then there is tens of those little needlebearings in your gearbox which can kill your differential right away... and whole gearbox later... better safe than sorry as always... ;)

The above happened to my 16V - cost about £600 to get a new diff fitted and I was lucky the bearings didnt wreck the gbox.

ok lets slow down,

the DS gaitor (gearbox end), not seal (as there isnt one) is leaking correct?

so...............

1. check the gaitor isnt punctured and leaking

2. the gaitor has probably just moved and created a leak, its held in place by 3 retaining bolts, if the box is drained and the gaitor bolts loosend off, and gaitor reset and retaining bolts retightened, u will probably find ur problem has dissapeared!

invoice will follow shortly

Yep, the gaitor leaks are common, the whole gaitor was shattered on mine and fortunately the whole shaft came out in ....errrm certain situation... and needles were all over the road (with the oil)

Nick Hill didnt seem to bothered about it. So what do i do? Get it changed asap? Whats the cost of getting it sorted now? What parts do i need to replace?

If theres only inner (near the gearbox) gaitor, then its the same as Clio 16v, so the rubber itself wont cost much (5£?) ... ive been told that it isnt so hard to do, less than hour, so labour costs aint much...if you want for reason or another change the whole driveshaft, i saw eurocarparts selling those for 99 quid each... if it knocks, rumbles etc. when turning or accelerating... change the whole shaft... but as weight said the leak can be fixed easily, but dont leave it with knackered/punctured gaitor...

the n/s driveshaft inner gaitor has a bearing/seal on the shaft and its this that leaks.there really commen for leaking and unless its a bad leak i wouldnt bother changing it.
