Written off the 172.

The engineer has been out today and written off my 172.He has told me I will get the current market value which he estimates at £3100.By the time they have taken off my excess of £375 this leaves me with £2725.I was planning to sell the car in the next few weeks with an asking price of £3700.Do you think this offer is reasonable or should I contest it?The car was mint and I think it is worth a bit more but I cant be arsed with the hassle.I just want to get another car and get back on the road.

If your not up for messing around, i'd just take that figure. But alot of people say never accept the first offer they give you...

Up to you Rob.

I'd decline on the basis it was a mint example. Get some prices of similar ones and see what they say!

definalty contest that... if the car was in mint condition theyve got to take that into consideration

my old MK1 RSi was in near show room condition.. not a hint of rust, stacks of service history etc etc

the first offer was £1030 which i refused, i then sent them copies of similar car forsale and lots of photos of mine which compared the condition of them to mine.

in the end i accepted and offer of £1600 :D

If they've offered you £3100 I'd say that was a pretty fair price.

If you want to haggle, it will only delay your payout by another 4/5 days. Depends wether claiming an extra £250/300 is worth your time to be honest. I would. Insurance company's are ass holes.

apparantly insurance companies work along the lines of this basis :

open auto trader look for 3 of the same model cars with simlear mileage/year

add the 3 prices of those cars together, divide by 3 to get the average.. AKA the value of your car!?

Thats what my solicitor told me two years ago?

NEVER take the first offer, on an old car of mine they offered me £700. They were going on trader for up to £1200 ish. I rang them up as soon as I saw the letter and told them they are worth £1200 and they said fine we will give you £1000 here and now or prove they are £1200 with ads from trader. I took the £1000 there and then because I couldn't be arsed with the extra hasstle:D .
They always try and see what they can get away with, t***s

I only got £3750 payout for my 51 172, i contested but didnt go up. They took £350 off the value because of a carpark dent in the boot, so i said if i get that dent removed, for about £50, can i have the extra £350, but they said no. Doesn't make sense!

I also had to wait 2 and a half weeks for the cheque to arrive after agreeing to their offer, was NOT impressed

because that makes the car worth more and and the point of insurance is to put you back in the same situation as you would've been before any given incident minus and payable excess

if you want another car tell the insurance company and dont accept any offer as they have to by law provide you with a replacement car with similar condition and milage to that which has been written off

the only reason the make offers is that is cheaper for them as they dont have to get some one to check the classifieds every day to find you a replacement in the same colour condition and mileage

if your car has erally low mileage and finding a replacement with the same mileage would be near imposible then you can pretty much dictate a price that you want

this man speaks sense....

When my 182 was stolen... glasses guide stated 10100 for it.. I had paid 10800 for it 12weeks early which was really cheap.. They offerred me 10100, I laughed, said in your dreams I wanted 11k for it. Found some expensive examples on the web similar and I got offered the 11k over the phone, half an hour later.

3100, if its low milage and was mint is too cheap. I would want 3700 for my 172. W plate with 49k on the clock.

Service history and condition counts for a lot when it comes to valuing them.

p.s its times like this when being with a quality insurer pays.

From the date of theft to payout took 5weeks for 182, this included christmas and new year bank holidays. I also got compensated for 5working days, when I argued they hadnt progressed my case!! That was with privilege (UKI).

I believe this to be the case. Never accpet their first offer, it's usually £10% down on what they'll go to.

You get what you pay for with insurance, especially in this situation. I was with Privilege years ago when my Fiesta RS Turbo was stolen, they paid me the price I was advertising to sell it for, no quibbles, cheque in the post days later.

I was prepared to haggle when selling it, but they did'nt even quibble!

As said above its worth contesting - even if its just a letter and a few ads of similar cars printed of the autotrader website.
This is what you paid your insurance for - so that if the worst happens you get compensated to the value of your loss (in an ideal world anyway)

I wrote a car off about 10 years ago. The offer my insurance company made was pretty much bang on, in fact it was better than it should have been so I accepted. Before I accepted I checked around to see if I could build a case to ask for me, but I couldn't.

Even though the offer was very very fair I was later told they had a further £500 in the pot, but I couldn't justify asking for more so that's where it stayed.

They have come back today with a revised figure of £3280 which I am going to accept.Lets see how long it takes them to send out the cheque. When I get my next car I think I will go through a broker.I know you pay a bit more but at least they can sort out things for you.

Not worth rejecting it one last time and requesting a much higher figure than you'd realistically expect, to see if they meet you in the middle?

Although I know what its like with writeoffs, you rightly want the whole thing over asap.
