F7R thoughts?

  1.2 16v 2005
Hi Folks,

Not technically a Clio question, but it's pretty close...

Recently had a crash in the wet weather an my car has been declared a total loss. However, the silver lining is that I'm now free to look at something a bit more fun. Since being a kid I've always fancied a Clio Williams but those that haven't either been been crashed or become victims to rust are commanding silly money nowadays.

I was doing a bit of thinking and remembered that the Williams F7R engine went into the early Megane Coupe, I've also managed to track one down locally which is a bonus. Would be a good stop gap until a reasonably priced Williams comes along I think. Now, I know I'm being cheeky in posting this on a Clio forum, but I figured if anyone would know- the good folk at Cliosport would.

Has anyone any expereince with these cars? If so- what are your thoughts?

Many thanks in advance!

No experience but clio engine in a megane sounds like madness. Megane lump in a clio is the way to go..

Early 2.0 16v meganes were great. They have issues with rust and immobilisers packing up but other than that they're pretty good!
Make sure Cambelt and water pump have been done. On such a cheap car, most people don't bother with proper maintainence now.

Okay firstly the Megane uses an F7R-710/714 which isn't the "Williams" engine. There's nothing special at all about the F7R that was fitted to the Williams Clios either except they were 2.0 16v rather than 1.8 16v engines that gave them 13hp more and a serious amount of torque which made them so much nicer to drive.

Now the Megane 16v with the F7R fitted was a brilliant engine which ran a much better cylinder head, valves were sized to encourage torque, 4-2-1 tubular manifold, sequential fuel injection and a waste spark DIS.

Great cars but the phase 1 16v looks dated now. The face lifted phase 2 still looks nice (IMO) even still.

That's easier marginally but it means messing about with pistons and ecu's

f7r is literally drop in with ecu and swapping 4 cables in 1 plug around

Only if you do it the way Scott dud. A standard phase 2 should already run an F4R so the loom and management are already capable. Just needs a remap and a physical engine swap.

I personally prefer the laziness of the F7R to the F4R even still.

Yeah but to get Clio power you need Clio pistons? And a Clio head?

thats effort compared to swapping an engine and 4 cables IMO.

Plus f7r Ftw ;)

This has been in my watch list on ebay for ages. Months in fact!

If it wasn't yellow i'd probably have it by now.

I think they're really good looking cars.

I love the fact it's Sunflower, I had one myself and they look awesome properly clean. That one 100% needs the spat mudguards though. Also noticed the spoiler is black... why?

The one thing I hate about Renaults of this era though are the terrible cloth patterns and the fact the interiors are blue.... bloody blue!!!

Yea, older renaults will never win any interior awards!

I'd hazard a guess at the rear spolier being painted by someone. Even when we were selling them at 3 years old (for like, £6999!) the rear spoilers were starting to pickle up.

A yellow megane coupe was the first ever car I got paid to valet for Renault. It had 17 inch TSW venoms on it! lol.

Mine had TSW's to but they (fortunatly) weren't Venoms lol

A phase 2 interior conversion is easy enough to. They're a very underestimated car to and handle pretty well. I'm sure there was a stripped one with us at Llandow last year.

I used to have a P plate F7R coupe in Williams blue and it was a cracking car... although the boot opening is awkward as its tiny.. The engine loves the revs and mine had absoloutley every mod con for a mid to late 90's car ie leather, aircon sunroof etc...they have little smart touches in them like electric rear windows (on a 3 door coupe). The only thing i ever had to put on it was a drivers side window reg and and a rear wheel bearing in 3 yrs of ownership.... I only bought mine as I have had numerous 5,11,21 turbo's and clio 16v's with 19 16v's mixed in as well so i thought why not try a coupe.

I loved my old Meggy Coupe! Broke it for spares when the gearbox went though. Didn't seem economical to repair.

Look at the ass end of that sticking up like a p**n star bagging to be slammed hard - why no adjust torsion bars?

lol I never touched the suspension on it, kept it std ride height. I think it's slightly exagerated in that picture due to the slope of the ground!

It's better on this one

They're actually alright to drive but being torsion bar rear beams they grip, grip, grip, bang... let go

I loved mine and a guy in a GTi 180 didn't want to believe my standard car destroyed him at Rockingham.

I'm looking forward to getting the coupe back in a few months, massively underrated cars imo. Had 2 and would love to put a 172 setup in 1. Might do one day!

I had a 1996 Megane F7R, great car! Engine is awesome, I actually prefer the F7 series engines over the F4's as they feel like they have more character.

Great thing about the Megane is how cheap they are, I got one for £450 with tax, test, full leathers (epically comfy seats!) and a few modifications. When I was done with it I broke it for basic spares and made £1500! Easy money.

The thing that killed the Coupe 16v image for me was all the 1.4 and 1.6 versions so the 2.0 16v faded in to the crowd.

Deffo agree though as they are a proper little weapon.

FLOL your starting to sound like Doug now!

It it was a tad loud. Not helped by the lack of interior David...

Tis a shame, small community though, and cars that not many people like.

hugley understated in my opinion but that is biased I suppose.

i made a killing breaking a coupe too, no community to do that now though

Later 2.0 16v. I crashed this into a barrier but as it wasn't too badly damaged I kept on driving it.
