S40 T5 sleeper project

  Listerine & Poledo
If they go any other colour than Factory, OEM silver, then you may as well just start hanging hello kitty from your back bumper.
And Monster stickers on the wing mirrors

OEM they will stay then!
I am gonna have to lower it at some point though, it's boardering on dangerous at times! Thankfully there was a 'sport' model that was 15mm lower and slightly stiffer so I think I'll get away with something like that.

There is no law that says this.
Sleeper effect would be to stiffen up at standard ride height.
That said, would anyone notice a 15mm dreop, probably not. If you can get the T5 R-design suspension then you could be onto something, although it'll still be a Volvo, not a polestar, so don't expect night-and-day differences

I never thought about that. What would be the options there then? Will a set of stiffer shocks be enough or will I need to go down the route of bespoke firmer springs?

I've toyed with the idea of a set of Koni FSD shocks, they should help with the handling but keep it civilised.

So, if I go just down the shock route I have 2 options
Bilstein B6's or the Koni FSD kit

Anyone have any experience with either?

You could probably get good results from uprated roll bars to be fair.
There's more to suspension that dampers and springs

Konis are bright yellow aren't they? Or orange for some of their shocks

Changing the shocks and using the standard springs won't work well IMO.

I've seen uprated rears, but for fronts I could look to the Mazda 3 MPS as that should bolt straight on (and be stiffer i'd have thought)

Will they alone be enough do you think or shall I use that as a starting point and see how it goes after that.

B6's are designed for use with OE springs, B8's for lowering. Yes, they are Yellow but not seen usually (and wouldn't take lokg to paint black anyway!)

Is there much more off the mps that can bolt straight on? Even with aero kit they sit at a reasonable height without looking too low (aero kit uses specific eibachs)

They ride very well too, hardly any roll and not too jarring to the back

I can't imagine people will notice the shock colours. Hell, my pwitty yellow billies are completely lost.
Rear ARB will help you get the nose in, front will only give you even more lovely plough-ever-onwards.

What is it you're actually trying to achieve? Because if it's turning the Volvo into a Megane Trophy in terms of handling, you're on a hiding to nothing

I'd look into a set of Eibachs for it first before I went down the route of changing anything else. Made a huge difference on both my Focai (I'm aware it's a different car, but still).
They actually made the RS more comfortable but with better handling than standard. Probably the best thing I've done to the car when you consider VFM.

Dangerous was probably unfair to it. It's only problem is body roll to be honest, so that's what I'd like to improve on.

I suppose it doesn't help coming from a 197 R27!

I have Koni FSDs on the S3. They give a nice ride, not harsh at all with less roll, and they're gold coloured. When I had my C70 it had (cheap) lowering springs but standard shocks. It definitely needed the shocks as well but it's obviously bigger, and more of GT car anyway.

So, my pipework has arrived - i'm yet to fit it though.
Here's the intake pipe, looks like a very well made piece of kit and has both connections.

Here's the hard pipe for turbo - intercooler, again looks well made, nice finish and has the appropriate hangers.

I've not taken a picture of the silicone, but we all know what black silicone hoses look like!
More pics and feedback once fitted.

30mm drop on eibachs will be barely noticeable to 99% of the population and work very well, especially with some decent shocks. Car looks great!

Quick question - for full on 'stealth' should I paint the intake pipe black? The OE pipe is black plastic so a quick coat of satin or gloss black may keep it less obvious. It's a shame to cover up a nice shiney pipe but I'm really considering it!

I'm thinking that too now; 30mm isn't much. They do a kit which is slightly more on the rear to level out he rake. I'd go for that if I were to do it.

Where did you get the pipe work from Chris?

They're from http://www.partsforvolvosonline.com. The company that makes them is do88.se they came over from Sweden.

All fitted now too

Noticeable difference in intake noise, turbo whistle, etc. the exhaust not has changed a little - deeper.

It feels a bit more urgent too, 2nd gear actually caught me out a couple of times last night. Boost comes on harder and sooner than I'm used too!

Overall, very pleased!!

I fancied a set of those pipes for my old S60 T5 but the price made me want to cry.

You must be a few grand into this now?

Not as much as you'd think

Downpipe & decat £400
Intercooler £250
Remap £400
K&N air filter £40
Brakes £350
Pipework £400
I've done all the work (apart form the mapping) so no labour costs so has cost £1,840

That means the car stands me at £5,840 which for 300hp and 350lb-ft of torque, and the level of comfort it gives, plus all the toys I really can't grumble at. Also - it costs no more to run or maintain than your average ford focus (well, apart from fuel costs) parts etc are all dirt cheap. There's not much for 6k that offers the same as I get from this car (that i'm aware of)

Love this. What does it average MPG wise?
Intercooler route is a bit different..lol

What's different about the intercooler? Pretty standard stuff to drop in a bigger front mount.

MPG wise, around town about 22mpg, on a run anywhere from 32-40mpg speed depending.

I just meant it running along the sump and snug between the gearbox. Nice warm route..lol

Heat rises though, so it stays pretty cool, that's the standard pipework route. Also it's pre intercooler so doesn't really matter. I've checked and my intake temps are nice and low (last time i checked it was 6 degrees ambient and 9 degrees intake, so working well!)
