mabey the pump is locking up and its the belt smoking i would seiously get it checked as that belt runs your water pump and could wreck the whole engine

i second the track/rack ends very slim chance it could springs if it sounds like a twang but as in the case of my sport if its like a creak cracking noise it could be the full rack

just pull the trims off and use a small flat screwdriver to remove gear insert to remove dash take out all hex screws behind the trims and theres a few where the blowers are for the windscreen
personaly if u have a sport dnt wreck the trims by painting them go to the scrap yard and get some...
try porting your inlet manifolds first real easy to do your self just match it to the gasket with a marker the file the metal out do both upper and lower inlets
i bought apex for my 172 off ebay £110ish ive now got coilovers but theye were really good springs lowers 30mm not too much they are easy to fit if u know what your doing but you will need a spring clamp to take ur old ones off the frount and to fit new ones dont just undo the top of the struts...
