172 Cup knocking noise - Gearbox? Driveshaft?

  2002 Clio 172 Cup
Hi there,

This is my first post since joining the forum.

Before explaining the problem I have spent hours reading through threads trying to diagnose the problem I have with my Cup.

I have what appears to be a very common noise coming from the front of the car when under moderately hard acceleration in 1st and 2nd gear, much more distinctive in 1st.

The noise is a constant knocking noise from 3k to 6k in 1st and the occasional odd knock in 2nd. What is strange every little knock it seems I lose drive.

I have had all the engine mounts checked and the mounts under the car near the exhaust and gearbox by a local trusted garage, all mounts appear to be fine.

My local garage believes the problem MAY be the driveshafts as both CV joints have jubilee clips around them which indicates they may have been changed at some point in the cars life. This means they could have been left to run dry which could damage the driveshaft itself (don’t know if this is true though).

I do not get any knocking around corners under load which I thought it may do if it were the driveshafts.

Due to the loss of drive every time it knocks, I get the impression it could actually be gearbox related!

Could anyone please suggest to myself if they have any idea of what this problem could be?

2002 Clio 172 Cup 82,000 4 months of ownership
Recent work:-
Exhaust centre pipe and backbox (local Garage)
Cambelt and dephaser pulley replaced (NW Performance)
Full service including gearbox oil (NW Performance)
New track rod end (NW Performance)

I have tried to include as much detail as possible but I would imagine someone will ask for more!

Many thanks

Trust me they all do it! alot of people on here will say the same, mine has been looked at several times now and it's still not cured. It has however improved since I fitted the powerflex dogbone mount, and pulled the engine forrward and re-torqued the top mount.

Well when I first bought the car it did it occasionaly in just 1st gear.

It now sounds and feels like its a serious problem like gearbox related. It sounds like the gearbox cogs are slipping.

It just takes less than 50% throttle in first for this knocking noise to appear.

I guees refitting the top engine mount and replacing the dogbone is a cheap option to see if would cure the problem.

Why don't you take it to NW performance for them to check over.

At this moment in time I cannot get any time off from work as it's an hour drive.
So for this moment in time I am looking at possible solutions to cure the problem so i can relay information to my local mechanic, hopefully to cure the problem until I can take time off from work.

loss of drive when it knocks? how loud we talking?

Jubilee clips is a standard fix as the oe clips rust and pop off on their own, try finding an RS clio without jubilee clips on the drivesahfts!

Well I could imagine you could hear the knocking from outside the car as a pedestrian, its not ear deafening but very noticeable inside the car.

Well that could rule out what my local monkey said about the driveshafts! very useful to know!

Your symptoms sound identical to mine, only the loss of drive is different to my car.

I too have checked every engine mount, replaced them anyway, poly bushed the dogbone and I still get the noise. It's only when the car hits max torque levels in 1st/2nd and a little bit in 3rd. I'm certain it's mount related still, but currently stuck!

I have tried most of what this forum has suggested and I am stuck aswell. The only difference as you say is the loss of drive hence I started a new thread.

only in a straight line or when turning? or both?

Straight line, no knocking when turning.

Thanks!

got to be box related then by the sound of it! All cups have been nailed, done alot of box rebuilds on them, diff bearings possibly

It really does sound like the gearbox itself is the problem, I just didn't know if the symtoms could be linked to it.

Well I think the only people that are competent in solving this problem that is near(ish) to myself would be NW Performance. As a personal opinion from you Fred, how much on average would you say a gearbox rebuild costs or would a recon box be cheaper to buy and fit by a garage? .. Or would you not have any idea?

erm go see specialist breakers in Accrington? they'll be the best/cheapest IMO

that sounds like dog bone to me, put the hand brake on and find biting point, will knock like fck if its dog bone (but your box does sound knackered too :p)

Thanks Fred you have been a great help!

I will still need to diagnose the problem by going to a more reputable garage like NW Performance. I would not like to replace the box and it wasn't needed!

But really... your input has been superb!

Many thanks

worn mounts will put a lot of strain on the diff bearing so it could be a mixture of the two maybe (that is what happened to my piece of s**te anyway)

i've seen them snap the bolt on top of the box and the the battery tray before, could be anything to be honest!

I havn't looked at the mounts under the car I have "just been told" they are fine. I'm going to try what you suggested about using the handbrake and find the biting point.
