172 dephaser

  clio 172
hello all,

well this is the story:

feeling peckish and thirsty so went to macdonalds and got a caramel frappe and a burger. pulled off and was heading home then my engine farted. it kicks in after 1500rpm it doesnt "fart" before then but does constantly after. however if i rev to say 3000rpm with the farts and then take my foot off the peddle it stops. this sound like a dephaser?

its in the garage at the moment having it replaced along with cam belt, water pump, oil and other expensive crap. just want to be sure my brothers not pulling my pants down.

thanks

Mark.

Possibly a jumped belt. When the timing is being advanced it's causing the valves to clip the pistons and make the 'farting noise' you describe. Unplug the VVT solenoid and see if the noise stops.

Possibility....

Yeah when we disconnected the VVT solenoid thing it did stop the noise. we replaced it and still did it. granted i am aware that wouldnt fix the problem now.
the garage he took it to he is a part of. but had the cam belt replaced, water pump, dephaser and some other bits around that aread for £550. didnt think that was a bad price.
if the valves clipped the pistons wouldnt that cause some damage to the valves?

anyway runs like a sexy mutha tucker now. il pass on your advice to him.

There we go then, get the new belts put on and count yourself lucky. For piece of mind you could replace all the valves, but you're not gonna know how much they've been touching without taking the head off...
