172 v's Elise

  Turbos.
A k-series vhpd sounds great on its ITBs though!

S1s look better than the S2s in my opinion, and the S1 Exige looks like a Group C racer, the S2 Exige looks a bit silly with the rear spoiler... love the LED lights on the latest S2s though!

Elises aren't hairy really, especially the base models. As Jon says, you really couldn't live with a Caterham day-to-day. A VX220 is fine though...

after initially posting this thread i've had a change of heart. i'm keepng the 172! the elise rocks but for the extra bit of pace (and total lack of practicality) i dont think its worth changing my immaculate 172 for a slightly tatty 8 year old racer. maybe next year i'll upgrade to a 111R or a VX220 turbo....

I have both a 172 Cup which I have owned from new and an S1 Elise which I have owned for 2 years with sports exhaust but otherwise standard.

In the right mood and on the right road the Elise is a far superior/more fun driving experience and makes the Cup seem dull. On a really twisty section you can effectively drive away from the Clio in the Elise. Having said that it is a struggle to live with day to day - mainly cos of the hassle of not being able to get luggage in and climbing in and out and back pain after 2 hours driving. I personally would not have one other than as a weekend toy.

Performance wise I run both cars against each other quite frequently with friends/family driving the other. The Elise is quicker to about 60. 60 to 80 not much in it then clio pulls away. I would comment though that the gearing on the Elise seems much better for making quick progress on B roads - its much more punchy and easier to drive along with the motor at peak torque/power.

Running costs are pretty much the same. Had my Elise 2 years now and nothing has gone wrong or fallen off.

2 completely different cars the Cup is a great normal car but the Elise is more of a toy/go kart substitute.

Good choice

You guys ought to consider the VX220 Turbo for about the same money. Faster than the Lotus and not so specialist. A friend of mine has one and it's as mad as a hatter. 0-60 in 4.3ish and onto 150mph

  Clio Cup
But these cars are not about speed, their about keeping the weight down and handling excellently. Doesnt the vx weigh about the same as a 172 cup. I think a properly fettled elise s1 with nitrons is going to be a much better car than any vx and when that k-series goes bang theres always a honda conversion.

Elise is about as quick as an RS Clio, no where near as practical and cant out handle a Williams, which the 1*2 you would think should be better (which it aint) than, so I wouldn't make a decision based on performance that's for sure.

2 live, quite right, an absolute bargain, but too late now, went in less than a day. I'm sure the new owner will have fun pasting Elise's and RS clio's lol
