182 FF Gearbox Rebuild/Refurb

  182 FF
Hi all,

Relative newbie here. Recently picked up my first Clio RS, an 05 182 FF. Mostly seems solid but there's a crunch when shifting from 4th to 5th quickly (double clutching appears to stop it happening). Was looking at getting the box checked out and repaired and was hoping someone could offer a bit of insight into potential costs etc? Is this something that you'd only entrust to an RS specialist (a la timing belt etc) or should any decent gearbox specialist be ok to do?

If you'd recommend an RS specialist (I'm tempted to go this route regardless) do any stand out in the Wolverhampton/Walsall area?

Cheers!

Possibly been low on oil, 5th is the first thing to suffer. Might get away with just popping the end case off.

Selector also has plastic sleeves on, seen them melt away and the fork start to eat itself.

According to the history that came with the car, the oil was sorted within the last 12 months. Guess the issue could have materialised before then though.

Assume you realise he means gearbox oil. I only say as no real reason for gearbox oil to be changed/topped up unless there was another issue with gearbox or N/S shaft.

Yep, gearbox oil. Don't have the paperwork in front of me but fairly sure the n/s shaft was replaced/repaired same time.

That would make sense in that case. Defo worth a level check, if not a refurb is better with a gearbox specialist as most renault specialist are specialist with cars/engines not box refurbs.

No worries. Thanks for the advice!

Checking level won't tell you anything. Chances are will need end case taking off and quick look at 5th.

@Drew57 I'm in Lichfield and I've had a lot of experience with the jc5's. It'll be the synchro ring and selector hub that's worn, and possibly the dog teeth on the gear.

Let me know if you want it looking at as I've got all the parts available, and by all means, do your research on me first.

Appreciate it @NorthloopCup. Any idea on a rough cost for the job?
