The cd changer under the passenger seat for the 172 says its alpine, does this mean i can get an alpine MD unit and the cd changer will work with it?

No. its proprietry renault stuff made by alpine

Alpine use a ai-net connector which is diffrent to the connector on the renault cd changer.

(some older alpine units use another type of connection mdac or sommat?)

What about hooking it up to another HU and keeping the steering wheel controls? Seems a waste to pay 300 notes for a changer and have a sh*te HU with no Preouts.

yes you can do that. Alpine, sony, i think pioneer as well, all have special adaptors you can buy to keep the stalk controls
