Buggered Gearbox

  2002 Flame Red 172
Think my gearbox is buggered. Was driving on motorway during the night when I saw a crashed car on the side of the road. Smoke piling out the bonnet and driver unconscious. As I was looking to see if I could see anyone in the car I didn't notice all the debris in the middle of the road and I drove over it. Extremely loud bang but the car drove fine for the rest of the journey. I got to my destination and lined the car up to reverse into a parking space. No reverse gear. Tried to put it into first and no first either. Luckily I still had 2nd,3rd,4th n 5th so I got it home. Next day I had the car jacked up to see what the damage was. Whatever it was I drove over has punctured the subframe and hit the gearbox linkage which I think has bent a selector fork inside the box and blocking reverse. I managed to get first back with adjusting the linkage but something is defo blocking reverse. I had the car at SWR today who are a Renault Specialist in Stirling. They also could not get reverse. Not even by hand. My options are strip the box n see what's blocking it or get another gearbox. What would you Clio geeks recommend?

If it's only reverse you can't get, the damage can't be that bad surely, just get it refurbished.

The price they quoted me to do this exceeded the amount it would cost me to buy another box n get my mechanic friend to fit it. Would it be more advisable to refurb rather than replace? Will refurbing the box be more reliable than buying another from a car with say 65000 miles on the clock?

Definitely better to refurb, buying another second hand box you just don't know how long it will last.

SWR doing the work mate? Hearing great things about them, prices seem very reasonable aswell!

I'm gonna give them a phone tomorrow and get another quote. First quote they gave me was just to remove n strip the box. My mates removing the box for me so i can just give SWR the box n save a shed load of money. Boys at SWR are spot on. Very friendly n helpful. I highly recommend them.

I got mine done there a few months back. Rolling roaded 172.4bhp after it so they did it properly. They were also cheaper than what Rentech in Edinburgh quoted me for the work.
