Have recently been speaking to a manager from a Renault dealership And he has told me the truth about the cambelt change on a clio ph2. He has basically confirmed that a clio will not need a cambelt change until 75k regardless of age. He has said some of the best cambelts that have been seen are on low mileage cars that are 9 years old. Age has no impact on cambelt life. Cambelt life depends on the forces that are put through the belt when accelerating hard. the harder you accelerate at the peak torque of the engine the quicker the cambelt will show signs of fatigue. and is possible to fail. but he has never seen a correctly clio cam belt fail even when on 100k. So I would advise people to ignore this age issue people state on cambelt. we both think this is a money making tactic based on incorrect fears on cambelt failure. and unrealistic cost on cambelt damage repair.

Hahah!

Oh dear. It's common knowledge that rubber deteriorates!

Yes very True Rubber also gets harder with age. and This belt is in a very contained Environment not exposed to the normal issues rubber is.

Re: Cambelt Con/Rip off tactics.

Isn't the age related to the heat cycles of the engine. Belts gets hot and cold so goes brittle. Hence why age is a factor ?

What happens when your tensioner fails? Toes the belt keep running on air?

When I had the belts on my 172 done when i bought there was cracking all over the place! That was a 7 year old belt with 90k on it. It wouldn't have lasted any longer.

yes That is very true. However heat cycles only reach full potential on a higher mileage. Age is just a number.

Re: Cambelt Con/Rip off tactics.

I mean, I guess those rubber tyres that start cracking when old must not be made of rubber. As it wouldn't deteriorate. Nor would those rubber bushes that deteriorate with time. Or those rubber brake hoses. Or easiest of all, wiped blades never go hard and stop working. It's all a myth.

Capitalism at work. Brainwashing people into buying stuff they don't need ;)

exactly mate that is a higher mileage than reccomended belts should be changed by 75k even if that comes in 1 year or 20.

7 Years and 46,000 miles.

If you leave a rubber band lying around for a month or two, it becomes brittle regardless of whether you've been repeatedly stretching it or not.

Your belt is essentially a fcuking great rubber band.

72k, not 75k. So when my belt snaps are you or that t**t at Renault willing to buy me a new engine???

If you believe this or he thinks this is true then this should not be a problem.

Yes. A Poorly maintained car will show this. A well maintained car won`t. My mate has been a regional manager for Renault for years he has seen it all. he says that if a clio is maintained well and the cambelt is changed by 75k there is no worry`s with camblelt failure :)

Re: Cambelt Con/Rip off tactics.

Flol. Do tell me how a poorly maintained car will have an effect on cambelt life.

Because a well maintained one would have had the cambelf changed on time.

To give you an idea of why you shouldn't trust the managers opinion in this case then read this. I was once in a Renault main dealer bodyshop when the experienced body shop manager walked by, stopped and asked me where I'd bought my bodykit from as he'd never seen it before. 100% standard. Working at a dealership doesn't automatically make you correct I'm afraid.

if I worked at Renault I would be more than willing to give you a new engine of your choice. I know the truth that it is all related to mileage and not year. also depends on the model in question.

Re: Cambelt Con/Rip off tactics.

Wanker, its 72k so that's b****cks for a start. Most Renault dealers don't even know the correct way to replace a cam belt on a Clio.

And that's your problem chap, you don't know what you talking about.

You have come in here talking crap from a so called manger from a Renault main dealer, as the saying goes "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing"

I take it you don't even own a Sport?

Apparently the whole depaser thing is a load of b*llocks too,
when they're worn in properly they're meant to sound like a knackered old black cab.
