Car went bang...

  Trophy, Flamer, BG
Morning all!

Yesterday afternoon, whilst joining a roundabout in 1st my 172 went bang on me. Gearbox failure, can select gears but when lifting of clutch a nasty metal on metal sound is heard. It had previously been in to the garage just over a week ago for it's MOT and all brakes replaced!! Damn car!! And was due back today to source an oil leak.

I've come quite attached to this little clio, it's engine seems really strong so I'm considering getting it fixed.

Mechanic told me I'll need a replacement gearbox, new clutch and possibly replacement driveshaft and flywheel. He hasn't removed anything from the car as yet.

I've seen a gearbox for sale from a cup "2001/2004" - JC5-129. My cars a standard 172 "2002". Anyone know if this would fit?

Any advice really appreciated thank you.

Thank you Scrooge

I had it towed by the AA and on the breakdown report symptoms identified it says loss of drive, suspect gearbox failure.

I bet the oil leak was from the gearbox selector shaft seal and the reason it's gone bang is because it's all leaked out and the box had ran dry, my old gearbox did exactly the same thing but at 70mph on a duel carriageway, bang and the sound of metal grinding and fusing together.

Get it taken to a specialist on here.

£100 clutch plus labour and oil so not the end of the world and *if the gearbox has gone it's only going to be £150-200 on top for a second hand box.

*id like to bet a whole packet of Haribo on the box not being gone.

All this is pissing in the wind fellas. If it goes to someone who knows what they're looking at im sure it'll be resolved in the easiest least expensive way possible.

Thanks for all your help guys. Really appreciate it!

If you do need a new gearbox get a JC5 130 the circlip is bolted in, that's if your car runs a non speedo box.

Is there any other way to find out its a non speedo box before it's pulled out? And it looks like the oil leak was from the box and not the engine.

Sounds like a similar problem to the one I have on my car, except I still have drive. I just get the banging/grinding whist accerating at a reasonable speed.

If you look down the back of the box they'll be a plug coming out of it with wires attached if it's a speedo drive.
