Crankshaft sensor

  185lb/ft dCi
On the motorway today the engine cut out, revs dropped straight away and had no power. So pulled over, looked in the bay couldnt see anything, started it back up, fired up fine but after running for 2 mins it died again. got RAC out and got the computer on it, main suspect is crankshaft sensor and this would tie in with the revs dropping to the bottom instantly.

Therefore where would be the best place to get one, gsf stock them? how much?

car is a 1.5dci

thanks

Renault changed the design of the crank/tdc sensor a while ago apparently

its £50-60 for the sensor and new bit of loom to go with it iirc.

Unsure if it can be bought from a factors, may be renault only (or scrap yard)

Went down today after them saying they were in stock. asked the parts man and the person who i was on the phone to misheard me and thought i said cam sensor! useless and yeah they didn't have in stock so i got them to order one in. I went to gsf earlier and got one for £19, the connector is black and looks same as the old one. worth a shot i suppose, going to fit it in abit!

Yeah i didn't think they would but turns out they do! will report back later to see if it fixes the problem.

it wont, you have just wasted £19

only, only, buy genuine TDC sensors !

Renault revised them for a reason with the new loom, you cant fit a new genuine sensor on an old loom, the problem is in the connector on the loom a lot of the time so you need to change both

im pretty shocked to be honest the dealers didnt have it in, we keep loads of them in stock for pretty much any model

Well i fitted the new sensor and it did it again, the thing thats weird is the fact that it starts fine every time but when it cuts out it is random, could be 1 minute or 20 minutes. I got my brother to play around with the loom and the sensor to see if it would cut out once its been moved or anything and it didn't cut out.

So i'm gonna try replacing the relays most likely the fuel pump relay as they are getting quite hot and have corroded a tiny bit. Worth a shot, if this fails, I will go down to renault and pick up the new style sensor as they should have one in stock by then.

Well update:

I went down to gsf today and they didn't sell the main relays so i went down to renault showed him mine, and he came out with a new style one that had an extra pin, I looked in the bay and there was a hole for an extra pin but no metal contact so it would have been a waste of time. Asked him how much for one, he said £17 plus vat!! jokers!

I also got him to show me the sensor that i told him to order yesterday, low and behold he brought out a black one with no loom, the exact same one as i got yesterday from gsf. I told him about them updating it and that they should be blue with abit of loom, he said that my car (53 plate) already got the newer style fitted as the overhaul happened before then.

BRUN care to enlighten me when they changed them over to the new style?

So now i'm abit stuck, going to leave car running for abit see how it gets on, if it cuts out i'll bring it to a specialist see what they make of it!
