DOA hard drive?

So today I put a new pc together, spec is as follows:-

Intel i5 4570 3.2ghz
Gigabyte GA-Z87-HD mb
Corsair 8GB DDR3 2133MHz Vengeance
Kingston 120GB SSDNow V300 2.5inch SSD
Toshiba 2TB Internal Hard Drive

so I put it together, initially just with the SSD in. Installed windows 7 x64, all windows updates etc. I then added the 2tb hd, and it just will not boot with that drive attached. It freezes on the first of the windows boot pages. So, turn it off, unplug the hd and try again and it boots fine.

I've tried enabling hot swap, but the system freezes as soon as I plug the 2tb drive in.

any ideas what's causing it? A firmware issue perhaps? Or could it just be a bad hd?

Checked the BIOS settings for the drives? SSD definitely needs to be set to AHCI mode, not sure if the HDD will need to.

Sorted, i needed Intel's Rapid Storage Technology software. As soon as I installed that it was fine.
