Does this sound normal?

  Clio 182
Hey guys,

I've had the belts done and the dephaser done recently as well as a full service (renault sport specialist) . Also had it along to Main renault dealer for a health check. Cars got full service history sitting at 75k.

This is the first clio 182 and in fact my first renault all together so I've no clue if they are noisy engines or not. Seems there's a vibrating noise you can hear when I hold it at a certain rev. Also just a generally tappy slightly knocky sound.. Not knocky loud as in bottom end is away but hopefully you can hear what I mean! The video probably makes it all sound worse than it is to be honest but I'm just a worried new owner!

With this is mind does this sound normal to you guys?

Cheers

I'm hoping the specialist and the dealer would of maybe pointed somthing out if it sounded out of the ordinary (both places gave the car a good once over) so hopefully me just being a nervous nelly :tongueout:

hmm does sound noisy but you are holding the phone in the engine bay. If I put my head in there I'm sure it would be loud.
Does sound a bit knocky but if your unsure just take it back to who done the work on it and tell them your not happy.
did it sound like that when you bought it?

Mixed reviews lol  I'm pretty sure it sounded the same before this to be honest. Will take it back to them anyway for my own piece of mind. They see their fair share of 182s!

I know apologies for the video.. Just just a quick effort

@Craig_8v where in Edinburgh are you about ?
I could have a small look / listen with you to see if i can shed any light on this

Definitely not right. Mine sounds absolutely nothing like that even through a recording on my phone..

Not right at all, sorry but the rocker cover will need to come off for a look at a minimum, why it wasn't when getting the belts done is madness with a noise like that

The cars cold just now so could go start it up and make another video. They are usually pretty lumpy sounding at idle anyway though.

If the dephaser is new then it's not that, sounds a bit like it until you Rev it up, it's something in the top end anyway, take it to someone who has lots of experience with this engine is my advice

Yeah dephaser was done with the belts. Assuming it was done correctly at rentec which is a pretty reputable specialist up in Edinburgh.

It sounds like a heat shield or what I thought was the plastic engine cover at first..

However the more I hear these engines idle on YouTube the more I think these are just quite rough sounding engine!

Here's another couple examples I found that sound really similar (minus the raspy tappy sound when revvin)

the bottom one is my video :tongueout:

I dont think yours sound anything like those! yours sounds like its got no oil in it tbh, have you checked? My 1.2 sounded similar when the pickup pipe got blocked/broke and the con rods small ends / rockers etc got starved of oil

  Clio 182
Yup it's got fresh oil less than 200 miles ago and seems to be circulating. Will give the garage a call and try and get it in and report back

  Clio 182
Thanks mate.. Luckily mine doesn't sound as bad as that but if it isnt to do with the new pully then god knows what it'll be.

It's going back to rentec tomorrow so will see what the outcome is 😧

Leaving the car in till Monday lads. No real diagnosis yet. Even they agreed it sounds like the dephaser but since they done that with the belts it's onto the next thing. Won't know anything more till they've had a better look :(

hope it's alright

On another note the raspy tappy noise you can hear when you rev it is the cover on the engine cover where you open to put the oil in 😂 Least that's one of the noises sussed.

^^ That's the noise that's always been there.. Not the rough knocky dephaser sound.. That's the new one :triumph:

Right well after leaving the car at the garage for a few days I can report back.

The noises were nothing serious... Luckily!

They done an engine flush which significantly sorted the tappyness (like night and day apparently) and the rough knocky rotational noise you could hear was the water pump!

Luckily I mentioned getting this done when I was getting the belts done and they said it was fine.... Turns out the tension of the new belt was enough to end the water pump! So just paying for the part plus some new coolant.

So quite relieved to be honest!
