Driveshaft or gearbox?

  LY R26 #288
I'm still trying to sort out the problem with my 182.

When I put it in to first gear and bring the clutch up to biting point the engine thuds.

No matter how much you try and feather the clutch. If you dip the clutch and bring it up again it's fine no matter how hard you bring it up. But If you take it out of first release the clutch then repeat the process you get the thud again. It's the same in reverse.

Does it sound like gearbox or driveshaft?

There's definitely something slack but it's not the engine mounts, I've checked.

my bet is the gear box mount, unless you actually take the mount off you cant tell if it broken or not. could also be the engine needs to be moved forward

I had the dog bone and gearbox mount off at the weekend. They didn't look bad but I might replace them just to eliminate them.

The thud seems most obvious in reverse.

what did you check on the mount to eliminate it?

All I did was take the dog bone off and the upper gearbox mount off and there was nothing visually wrong. All the rubbers were in tact. Obviously there's no way I could replicate the stress an engine would put on them though.

Oh I also checked the bolt holes on the upper gearbox mount and the nut at the bottom of the stud which goes through the whole lot. I got a spanner on it but couldn't turn it either way.

oh yeah, got it off me i think actually LOL. If it's worn then the joint pulls apart and clunks back shut

Bit of an update.

I think the thud is present in neutral aswell.

With the handbrake on if I select reverse, release the clutch slowly I get the thud at the biting point, after that I can dip the clutch and bring it back to the bite with no thud over and over again. However you can hear a mild thud and feel it slightly once taking it out of reverse, putting it back into neutral and releasing the clutch.

Just to update this, I took it to a specialist today. He drove the car and inspected it on the ramp. I replaced the dog bone and upper gearbox mount. But he doesn't think the drivers side one is causing the problem either.

He thinks its the diff in the gearbox and would have to investigate further. So it's gonna be expensive.

Anyone know how much it costs to recon a 182 box?
