FN10 Sealing Selector Installation questions

  Clio 182
Hi guys, so I got my kit this morning from http://www.tnd-france.com/ and I've a few questions over the installation of this. I robbed these instructions from another thread:

Drain gearbox.( heard it can be done without draining?)

Disconnect gear linkage at the end of the long rod coming form gear stick one 13mm(I think) bolt.

Remove circlip from gearbox and pull downwards the plastic ball socket to remove small rod.

Remove or cut the old rubber gaitor on the selector shaft, if you don't discard this part and reassemble with it on you will struggle to get reverse gear.

Remove bolt holding the spring assembly and remove spring.

Carefully prise old seal from gearbox, then cut it off, sharp cutters required. Be very carefull not to induce any burrs into the gear box shaft or casting.

Clean selector and surrounding components thoroughly.

Pull the 2 rubber o-rings over the selector and work them up to the shaft where the seal will eventually sit, I put a bit of grease on them to aid them sliding along.

Clean again.

Put the 2 half circle plastic parts over the o-rings to make 1 complete unit. Then using the plastic shim supplied push the assembled seal all the way up into the gear box, I used a couple of large spanners as levers, work your way around gently do a little bit at a time and make sure it goes in evenly, If its all lined up you shouldn't need too much force.

Fit the metal retaining bracket supllied with new seal kit to the the spring bolt assembly and refit.

Then just stick it all back together in the reverse order of removal.

It comes with instructions although not the best, on the instruction sheet there is a link to the manufacturers website slightly more detailed instructions can be viewed there. (http://www.tnd-france.com/notice_e.htm)

You will feel a firmness in the gearstick but this will return to normal over a period of a few weeks, mine did.

Now questions are, before I get under the car:

Where is this circlip on the gearbox? Is it under the gaiter?

Do you delete the spring from the gearbox? or do you install it again? I know I completely remove and discard the gaiter and the old seal.

How easy is it to get the seal from the gearbox out?

Can this be done without draining the box? Surly when removing the seal oil will go everywhere?

Finally, the u shaped plastic piece in the kit (2nd picture down bottom piece http://www.tnd-france.com/notice_e.htm) what's the purpose of this? is it actually needed/ As far as I can see it's just used for pushing the other piece up and then disgarded.

Here's a picture I robbed from the internet for reference (Ignore the circled bits)

Ah I see the circlip now, it's under the rusted selector in that picture above and you then pull down the ball socket and remove the rod.

Again, robbed picture from the interwebs!

The gaiter shown int he above pic, is that the one you remove? Not the one at the end of the long selector?

stretch the gaitor over the selctor shaft and do the same to refit it once the seal kit is fitted. you also keep the spring (don't bin it)

the u shaped part is for pressing the two half pieces in. the old seal needs to be popped out of position(i used a blunt 1 1/2 chisel to pry it down) tin snips or similar is ideal for cutting the old one out watch you don't damage the actual shaft whilst prying and cutting it..

I'll take your word for it Martin. Gonna tackle this some evening, do a full oil and filter service while I'm at it.

I put my spring back on when i did mine.

Don't worry about the stiff gear changes it will loosen up after a few weeks.

Hey Martin, I did this at the weekend and wow, that gearbox seal is a right nasty piece of work to remove. I didn't realise it was metal inside! I had to get a hacksaw to remove it!

Apart from that the only problems were getting the 2 plastic pieces back into the hole, that took a fair bit of time and patience, and I had to drain the box, I've no idea how you would attempt this and not drain it. As soon as you undo the bolt holding the spring oil comes flying out!

Fingers crossed now it's done the trick and it doesn't leak again.

;)

Glad you sorted it mate. So in the second pic that bolt that the spring locates in started leaking oil once you undone it?? I never thought the box oil came from there?

Yea oil started flying out, made a right mess of my garage as I wasn't prepared for it. Strange it has no washer though.

Bit of a thread resurection this one - but I've looked at ordering this kit from Veritec online but they dont seem to post to the UK - or at least dont have the UK available in the drop down to be able to post to when completing your address onthe online form.

I've emailed them, but whilst I'm waiting for a response has anyone actually ordered one recently and if so where from ?

I've actually had a response from both TND and Veritec

I tried ordering online from Veritec but couldn't find United Kingdom or England in the drop down box in French (Angleterre etc) -when entering my delivery address, so assumed they didn't deliver to the UK.
I emailed them and they've responded.
It's there, they pointed out that you have to select Royaume Uni which is UK in French

TND also responded and they also deliver to the UK but need to pay by IBAN and send info through to them.

I'll get it ordered after its been up on the ramps at the weekend and I see what else it needs first :expressionless:

Aie, thanks again for getting this done @marinemackay2003

For others doing this, a spanner below the pacman shaped plastic piece to knock the new seal in helps!

Some have found the fix doesn't work & it has been suggested that the o-ring specs can vary. Mine's working so far! Hopefully as it was difficult to fit, it'll mean a good long-lasting seal!

Also reccomend at least topping up gearbox oil if you don't do the fix & changing if you do, a small drip can add up & mine feels much slicker with fresh Sintofluid
