Front end refresh - What should I change?

Hey folks,

I've just bought a 55k 03 172 Cup, one lady owner from new.

It was cheap for such a low mileage car but not without it's minor issues. First up, it's on the original timing belt, so being 12 years old I need to address that first. I've booked in into an independent who is familiar with these motors to get the timing belt, dephaser and water pump changed. Most other jobs I want to address myself.

I've only driven the car home and did so pretty gingerly. One the one occasion I did give it a little welly, I heard a loud vibration coming from the bulkhead. At first I thought it was the exhaust but now think it's the engine itself, fouling the bulkhead. Either way, I'm guessing engine mounts need replaced or tweaked?
There was the occasional knock from the NSF strut area. There doesn't feel like much in the way of steering play to drive it but after jacking the front end up I can feel slight play when I wiggle the wheel at the 3&9 position. Nothing really stands out as being the weak link so i'm thinking of refreshing the whole lot if it doesn't cost the earth. I'm going to price parts up just now. Can anyone advise on the cheapest place to get the parts and anything else I should add to the list? - Wishbones, Track rod ends, Strut top mounts.

With the car jacked up, I can see that the springs look pretty tired and the shocks are probably on their last legs too being 12 years old. Now I want to keep the standard ride height as my favourite roads are pretty lumpy. Should I look at replacing the springs and shocks with OEM ones or are there cheaper or better equivalents? I don't want the expense of coilovers and i'm not planning any track time. I would imagine that in standard and new condition, these cars were good straight out the box for my needs.
Based on my driving intentions (fast, bumpy, twisty road use) is it worth polybushing anything in particular or is that overkill?

Any advice is more than welcome :)

Well I've been quoted £585 for the belts, waterpump and dephaser change. I've factored a total of £1500 into the total build. I need to get 2 tyres for that as well so i'm hoping to spend no more than about £600 on the suspension and steering work.

Currently looking on Carparts4less.com and there are various shocks listed. Sachs, KYB and Bilstein. All are priced around £40 and have the same fitment. I had KYB on my Forster STI and they were fine. I have Billies on my TT QS but it's the all singing all dancing coilover kit, I've no experience of there cheaper stuff

Thats way OTT. Get it to a SPECIALIST and not an independent. Where are you located, you've not filled out your profile.

£585? I thought that was reasonable, after a few searches on here I figured £700 was about the general specialist quote.
I'm usually located in the North East but currently in Dunfermline, Scotland.

By North East, I meant the north east of Scotland. Clioturbo are 150miles away but I guess the £85 saving (£135 with club discount) more than pays for the fuel to get there and back, just not sure what i'd do in Durham while I wait....;-)

Renault Wolverhampton are a trader on here mate. Also with your car being a cup that bill should be less. Id also opt for standard dampers and uprated springs if that way inclined.

I sold one of my mountain bikes yesterday and plan to use some of the money to give the Clio a new lease of life...
So, i'm planning to order the parts for the suspension, brake and steering refresh tomorrow, Tuesday at the latest.
On previous cars I've chased knocking and play around the car by replacing one bush or part at a time. I'd rather just replace all the usual suspects at once, then hopefully have a decent handling and knock free car for the summer, instead of being on the axel stands every other week.

I'll list my plans below. If anyone reading this thinks that my chosen brand or source should be avoided then please let me know. Likewise, if there's better deals to be had elsewhere. Also, if I've missed anything that you'd recommend changing, to save me having to do it at a later stage, i'd really appricate your advice as this is my first Renualt.

I've done the timing belt, dephaser and aux belt. Changed the dog bone mount. Front brakes are almost new.

I'd imagine the standard springs would be ideal for B-roads but i'm open to advice.

From your list.

Discs - okay.
Shocks, get your membership and google trade parts Wolverhampton and you'll get discounted original parts. Shocks are circa £40 a corner, wishbones are about the same for each side.
Springs - buy Eibach sport lines, they're an improvement on standard ride and are a little lower. These are circa £130 iirc.
Top mounts - okay.
TRE - okay.
There's not ARB drop links, just get power flex ARB bushes as a set, there is 4.
CAT - please yourself, remember a decat will need removed for MOT unless you know a friendly tester.

To add to your list I would do.

Tie rods - Firstline FTR 5277. They might be listed as for a Kangoo but they're the ones you want for a Cup.
Steering rack bushes - originals are circa £30 for a set but I believe power flex do them now too.

All of that will give you a spot on car, then if you want you might want to replace the rear beam bushes with power flex too, they should be okay though.

I was just making a list of parts as I'm looking to do the same thing and refresh my 172 non-cup.

Yeah, my brother and I will do all the work on the car. Hopefully by next weekend all the old perished rubber bushes will be no more.
 
Paying the brother with beer?

I won't be doing the work myself as I'll be batting that over to a mate with a garage.

I'm just not sure how long the whole thing will take or whether I should do it in sections..

Ouch!! Just went to order a Cat from Renault Wolverhampton........ £900 plus VAT??? Looks like i'll be going down the aftermarket route. With the VAT that's pretty much what I paid for the car....

For anyone who maybe planning the same, I've just ordered.
Front shocks x2, rear shocks x2, strut top mounts & spacers x2, tie rods x2 ,wishbones x2, (Renault Wolverhampton) £396
Track rod ends x2 (Carparts4less) £29.76
Eibach Pro springs x4 (KamRacing) £171.70

I've also ordered the following for the rear.... I'll be refreshing the rear axel once the front is complete.
Mintex Rear discs, bearings and pads (Ebay) £59.90

Taking the advice above, I'm still looking to buy front anti roll bar bushes and steering back bushes. Reading a few other threads on here it sounds like the anti roll bar bushes are a nightmare to change without ramps, even more so with polybushes. I can't find standard bushes anywhere, any ideas?
The steering rack bushes on K-tec's site state they are for a SMI rack, and to check you have a SMI rack prior to purchase. My rack doesn't appear to have a sticker on it. How many other variations are there?

I just got poly arb bushes from Obsessive Detail who are trader on here, I think they are still running a discount, could also get steering rack one from them

That's from lower model Clios mate and thank fcuk for that as they're a total barsteward to fit.

Poly ARB bushes are a gimmick IMO and I challenge anyone that can tell me they feel the difference.... they only make sense if the OEM are stupid money or they're from a distance car that is known for wearing out the bushes... The Clios don't. So please yourself in that one, I would suggest the cheapest possible and yes they're a nightmare to fit like most ARB bushes but you don't need a ramp, you just put weight on and off of the opposite wheel to move the ARB for you.

You got a good price on those bits, iirc when I ordered new OEM inner toe rods and TRE's they were like £45-50 each.

There are only two types of steering rack, SMI and TRW. It is a bit of a lottery and it doesn't seem to be time or model specific. SMI are on 90%?so just go with those as outside of the identification sticker, finding the embossing is a right pain.

Is it worth polybushing the steering rack then or going with standard? Everything i've bought bush wise has been OEM.
As well as buying all these new parts, i've ordered replacement bolts for most things so I can save time by just cutting the old ones off, should make life much more simple.

I've come across hundreds of open-ended threads on here, so a quick update to finish this off…..

We fitted everything last week, everything bar the inner anti-roll bar bushes. I also went for 4 new tyres.
What a transformation!! Previously, nothing specific was broken or worn to the point where it (exclusively) hampered the handling, but a combination of everything being 12years old and a bit tired made the drive a little frisky.
Now it feels smooth, turns in quicker, more balanced at speed, no wobbles etc etc. The only downside is that it feels slow now because it's so controllable.
I bought this clio a month ago as a super-cheap run-about, but after changing all the suspension components, brakes, bearings, tyres, de-phaser and all the belts, it now owes me £2600…
The power steering pump has just started whining. There's also a few minor dents and scratches to be sorted so I'll no doubt be pushing £3k by the time it's all done.
