Fuel tank capacity

Does anyone know the fuel tank capacity on a 172?

I just checked the handbook and it says 50 litres. I didn't think it was so much..

I am getting 38mpg average at the mo. Done 330 miles and nearly on the red. What does everyone else get to the gallon/full tank etc?

The tank has a nominal 50 litre capacity. On mine its actually 51.

But its less than that before it shows empty. Mine give me the time to fill up warning light at 43.5 litres.

in your reserve tank you will have a gallon left once light is lit .

50 litres? Not doubting it but if petrol is roughly £1 a litre, how come its never cost me that much to fill up? Is it because of the bit of reserve thats always left when i do?

About 30 miles once light is lit.

So does that mean the light comes on when you have the 10 litre reserve left?

I just filled up right to the top a few miles after the light cam on and it cost £44.50 (@93.9p a litre).

ive had 55 miles with the light lit on a few occasions....never doing that again though

The most i've gone with the petrol light on is 40 miles.
